Former US President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt on 13 July, and a little over a day later became the official candidate for the US presidency from the Republican Party. On Sunday, 13 July, during a rally in Pennsylvania, a man fired several shots in the direction of Trump and the crowd. The former US President was not seriously wounded - the bullet grazed his ear. As a result of the shooting, one person died and two others were injured.

Later, the FBI named the man who shot the former president: it is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, 70 kilometres from Butler.

Law enforcement authorities found an AR type semi-automatic rifle at the scene. Since the 2010s, this type of weapon has been used many times in the US in mass "shootings" - shooting at civilians.

After the assassination attempt on Trump, current President Joe Biden called for increased security for members of the Republican Party, as well as to improve it at the convention of the political force.

Also, addressing his compatriots, Biden called on Americans to abandon political violence and solve the differences in the elections. Trump, in turn, promised to rewrite the speech at the Republican convention and instead of criticising Biden to focus on uniting the nation.

Trump has become a candidate in the US election

In Wisconsin, at the Republican Party's national convention, Donald Trump was officially nominated as a presidential candidate. 

Every four years, each of the two major US parties holds such a convention to officially choose their candidate for the US presidential election and prepare for the final stage of the campaign.

So, Trump will now definitely run for the Republican presidential nomination. But also the former president presented a candidate for vice-president of the United States. He became the 39-year-old senator of the state of Ohio J. Vance.

Potentially the second man in the United States: who is J. Vance?

According to Western media, Vance attracted attention after the release of his best-selling book "Hillbilly Elegy", in which he described how he grew up in a working-class environment and how it influenced his politics and worldview.

Vance's nomination as a potential vice-presidential candidate should bring Trump votes from the working class, who were reluctant to vote for Trump in 2016.

Although Vance criticised Trump 8 years ago, today he has become an ardent defender of the former president - especially on TV news channels.

It's also important to note that Vance belongs to the same group of Republicans that caused U.S. aid to Ukraine to stall for six months. He and his associates believe that the U.S. should primarily focus on strengthening the southern border and fighting illegal immigration, as well as confronting China.

Vance considers military assistance to Ukraine in its confrontation with Russian aggression inappropriate for America.

Trump's election chances increased after the assassination attempt

As writes the analytical block of the exchange Polymarket, according to the published data, the former US President has already collected more than 70% of the votes. Such indicators jumped after it became known that in the state of Pennsylvania there was an attempt on his life.
