Montenegro is one of the most picturesque countries in the Balkan region - a country with a rich culture and beautiful views. However, foreign drivers need to know the rules of the road, fines and toll roads in order to travel by car. We tell you about all this to make your traveling in this country safe and comfortable.

Traffic rules in Montenegro 

In general, Montenegro has generally accepted European traffic rules. For example, speed limits: 

- In populated areas: 50 km/h.

- Outside populated areas: 80 km/h.

- On highways: 100-120 km/h (unless otherwise stated).

All passengers in the car must be buckled up. As for children, persons under 12 years of age must be in special child seats appropriate to their age and weight.

It is prohibited to use a cell phone without a hands-free system while driving.

The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.3 ppm for drivers with more than two years of experience and 0.0 ppm for novice and professional drivers.

When it comes to road signs, Montenegro uses international road signs that are easily recognizable to most foreign drivers. However, it is worth paying attention to local peculiarities such as bilingual (Montenegrin and English) signs.

Fines

As a rule, fines in Montenegro range from a minimum to a maximum amount. The maximum fine is imposed on drivers who violate traffic rules for more than the first time, significantly exceed the allowed limits or behave aggressively and inadequately when dealing with a police officer, including threats or attempts to bribe.

Here are the main types of fines:

Speeding: in cities and other populated areas, the maximum speed limit is 50 km/h, outside it is 80 km/h. The fine for exceeding the speed limit is from €30 to €2000.

Not using dipped beam headlights will make you €30 poorer. As for seat belts, you will have to pay from €40 to €100 for not wearing them.

The driver is allowed to talk on a cell phone only with a hands-free system. Driving with a cell phone at the cheek from €60 to €150.

Children under 5 years old are only transported in special restraint seats. It is forbidden to transport children under 12 years old in the front seat without a child seat. The fine for violation is from €40 to €100.

How to pay the fine?

If you violate traffic rules, the policeman will take away your license and write a fine. He has no right to take cash, so you will either have to pay by card (if the policeman has a terminal) or go to a bank or post office.

If the time is late and the post office is not working, you can pay the fine the next day, but you will have to pick up your license at the police station in the city where you were stopped. 

Toll roads in Montenegro

When driving on Montenegro's highways, tolls are only charged on one section. The toll can be paid by credit card or cash at the respective toll booths

In Montenegro, there is only one toll on the 42-kilometer section of the A1 highway between the settlements of Smokovac and Matesevo.
