According to the EU Asylum Agency (EUAA), in 2024, Germany remains the clear leader in the number of applications for temporary protection. However, compared to the same period, i.e. the first half of 2023, this figure decreased by 20%.

One possible reason is the reduction in the flow of refugees from Ukraine, as most of those who wanted to leave had already left for safe places abroad during the first year of the full-scale invasion. Another reason is the introduction of stationary border control, as most applications come from refugees from Syria (29%), Afghanistan (18%), and Turkey (10%).

However, even though the rate of migration has decreased, Germany remains the number 1 destination country for asylum seekers in Europe.

Which countries are most often chosen by migrants?

In the first half of 2024, 499,470 applications for temporary asylum were filed in the EU, Norway and Switzerland. This figure decreased by 2% compared to the same period in 2023.

Analyzing this data by country, we have identified the rating of the most popular countries among migrants:

1. Spain - 87,700 applications (+1%);

2. Italy - 81.108 (+32%);

3. France - 77.474 (-6%);

4. Greece - 29,776 (+77%).

The number of applications for temporary asylum in Austria and Bulgaria decreased by 41% and 39% respectively. The lowest number of applications was filed in Hungary (13), Slovakia (79) and Malta (234).
