The long-awaited European Championship will start in just a few days. This year's Euro will be held in Germany, one of the biggest countries in the EU, which is famous for its architecture, entertainment, cars and, of course, beer.

During the upcoming Euro German authorities expect 12 million tourists, some of whom will come to watch football and some of whom will come to have a good time at fan festivals.

All this sporting fun will start already on the 14th of June.

Euro 2024 Opening Ceremony

The European Championship is scheduled to kick off in Munich at the Allianz Arena. The opening game will start at 20:00, where the home team will face the Scots.

Given the tradition of opening football tournaments, you should not expect a celebration of the level of the Olympics opening, but the Euros are always fun! And here's why:

In the cities hosting the tournament (10 of them) - Berlin, Hamburg, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart - fan zones with the possibility of public viewing of matches on big screens will be organised.

These areas will be centred around fans from all over Europe and the rest of the world, which means: constant songs, noise and music.

Also the day before the tournament kicks off, i.e. on 13 June, there will be a concert in Stuttgart's Schlossplatz square, featuring artists Robin Schulz, Leony, Le Shuuk and Topic. The mini-concert will take place at 16:00 and will last until 22:30 local time.

On the day of the opening match itself, there will also be a mini-ceremony at the Allianz Arena. It is expected to start about 30-40 minutes before the match itself. 

Berlin will be the centre of Euro 2024 

Here's a tip from VU: if you're going to take part in this football festivities and plan to attend events in Germany, make sure you go to the fan zone in Berlin. It will be one of the biggest zones in the history of the European Championship. It will be organised on the territory of a blocked off street - from the Brandenburg Gate to the Big Star Square.

Entrance to the fan zone will be absolutely free. However, you can take with you bags no bigger than A4 format, drinks - no more than half a litre, and only non-alcoholic and only in plastic bottles or cardboard bags.

The capacity of the zone is 30 thousand people, but if necessary, the organisers can open reserve areas so that the total number of football fans at the Brandenburg Gate can be up to 100 thousand people.

Security during the Euros: this should be taken seriously

Germany is a popular country that has already hosted such events on its territory many times. For example, the same World Cup in 2006. 

Preparations for the organisation of security during the Euros began several years before the tournament itself. Foreign police officers will also arrive in the country to monitor public order.

Particularly close co-operation has been established with the French police. They will help to keep order during the football championship in Germany, and the German police will help a little later at the Olympic Games, which will start in Paris two weeks later.

Interior Minister Nancy Faser said Germany was "very well prepared" to deal with any security threats during the championships.

Despite the good preparation of the German authorities, it is also up to each traveller to take care of their own safety.
