Slovenian Railways has launched a new rail route that allows you to travel through three countries and eight cities in just two hours. This is reported by euronews.travel.

This route, which once lasted five hours, was closed more than 30 years ago, but now it has been reopened for the summer months, namely until September 30, 2024. And most importantly, such a trip will hardly hit a tourist's budget, as tickets start at €8 one way.

New railway route through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia: what can you see?

The new route runs along a railroad built more than 150 years ago during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is an ideal option for a weekend trip, with the ability to get off and on at different stops.

The train departs from the northeastern Italian port city of Trieste, which is known for its elegant waterfront palaces and Art Nouveau cafes. The route then crosses the border into Slovenia, stopping at four stations: Sežana, Divača, Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica.

Cycling enthusiasts can stop in Ilirska Bistrica, where they can rent electric bikes and ride along forest trails overlooking snow-capped peaks. The train then crosses the border into Croatia, stopping in Šapjane and Opatija Matulja before reaching its final stop in Rijeka.

After getting off at the Opatija Matulji station, passengers can spend the night in the nearby resort of Opatija, known for its rococo villas and luxury hotels overlooking the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Rijeka, another port city, is known for its promenade streets lined with Habsburg palaces and a 19th century theater decorated by Gustav Klimt.

Schedule of the new train through 8 European cities

Trains will run daily in both directions until September 30, 2024. Trains depart from the Villa Opicina station in the suburbs of Trieste at 7:50 am. The train stops in Ilirska Bistrica at 8:54 a.m. and arrives in Rijeka at 9:54 a.m. In the opposite direction, the train departs from Rijeka at 18:25 and arrives in Villa Opicina at 20:40.

One adult ticket for the whole trip costs from €8, but you can also buy separate tickets for each stage of the trip if you plan to stop at different stations.

The service is currently available until September 30, but the carrier hopes to make this route permanent in the future.
