France is planning to introduce a 49-euro travel pass for rail travel this summer after the government reached an agreement with the regions. This was reported by euronews.travel. 

We will tell you who will be able to use the pass at this price, on which routes it will be valid, and whether this step can be the beginning of further changes in the country's transport policy. 

Who will be able to use the budget travel pass in France? 

The country's Minister of Transport, Patrice Vergrier, said last week that an agreement had been reached with all regions. The pass will cost 49 euros per month, and in July and August, this benefit will be available to about 700 thousand people under the age of 27.

The pass will allow unlimited travel on TER and Intercity trains, but will not allow you to use TGV high-speed trains.

What routes can I travel for 49 euros?

Despite the criticism, the summer pass will make large parts of the country accessible to young people. TER trains, which serve about 1.1 million passengers a day, connect local stations in the regions of France.

Among the popular routes that can be traveled with the pass are the Bordeaux - Arcachon (fare is approximately 13 euros) and Marseille - Toulon (14 euros) routes. 

Passengers who regularly use these routes will be able to save significant money with the new pass. For example, a trip from Lyon to Marseille takes less than 4 hours, but often costs more than the price of the new ticket of 49 euros.

The budget travel pass will be an experiment for a year

The €49 travel pass will be an experiment that will last for a year. The cost of the program is estimated at 15 million euros, with 80% public funding. Some mayors have criticized the project due to the lack of detail in the plans.

As you know, in Germany, the €49 per month ticket valid for almost all types of transportation, known as the Deutschlandticket, is very popular. This summer, France is launching its own version of a budget travel pass.

"After 6 months, the initial version of the travel pass modeled on the German one has now been transformed into a subscription costing 49 euros for two months on the network outside the Ile-de-France region and only for young people," said representatives of the regions.

The most populous region of Ile-de-France will be excluded from the routes. Young people from the Hauts-de-France region will have to buy an additional ticket to travel in France, the cost of which can reach up to 16 euros.

Although the travel card will initially be implemented as a one-year experiment, it may be extended and expanded in the future.
