How was the level of happiness measured?

The World Happiness Report is based on the average value obtained from the results of surveys for the three-month period from 2021 to 2023. Survey participants subjectively assessed their level of well-being, expressing positive and negative emotions.

The report was compiled using data from a global survey by Gallup. Participants were asked about their overall life using a scale from 0 to 10. Typically, about 1000 responses are collected annually from residents of each country. The happiness rating is based on the average of these scores over a three-year period.

Survey participants were asked to rate their positive emotions, such as laughter, satisfaction, and interest, as well as negative emotions, such as anxiety, sadness, and anger. At the same time, happiness scores may differ between countries more than the emotions themselves, as this is due to different life circumstances in different cultures.

Which countries were included in the list of the happiest in 2024?

The top 10 happiest countries have remained almost unchanged in recent years. Among them:

1. Finland

2. Denmark

3. Iceland

4. Sweden

5. Israel

6. Netherlands

7. Norway

8. Luxembourg

9. Switzerland 

10. Australia.

Meanwhile, there were some changes in the top ten, including new countries such as Costa Rica and Kuwait (12th and 13th). The Czech Republic and Lithuania (18th and 19th) also entered the top twenty, indicating that happiness in these countries is growing.

Austria was ranked 14th, Canada 15th, Belgium 16th, Ireland 17th, and Slovenia 21st.

The United States and Germany dropped out of the top 20 countries, ranking 23rd and 24th, respectively, compared to the previous ranking, where they were ranked 15th and 16th.

Among the top ten happiest countries, only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. Out of the top twenty, only Canada and the United Kingdom have populations over 30 million.

According to the report, the least happy people live in Morocco (107), Kenya (114), Egypt (127) and India (126). The ranking is completed by Afghanistan, which is ranked 143rd.

Ukraine, unfortunately, was ranked 105th in the global happiness ranking. This demonstrates the need to improve the living conditions and well-being of Ukrainian citizens. Previously, Ukrainians were happier, ranking 95th.
