Easter holidays in the Czech Republic are a combination of Christian customs and pagan traditions, which makes this experience unique.

According to Catholic tradition, Easter marks the end of the 40-day Lenten season. Every year, Easter is celebrated on different days. It depends on the date of the first Sunday after the vernal equinox. This year, unlike in Ukraine, the date of the holiday in the Czech Republic is 31 March.

Easter traditions: what makes Prague unique during the holiday?

In Prague, Easter markets open on the eve of the holiday, the most famous of which are located on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. These places are immersed in the atmosphere of spring renewal: colourful Easter eggs, flowers and decorations can be seen everywhere. 

Czech Easter eggs are a real art form, handmade and decorated with intricate patterns, each region has its own unique designs. However, it is customary in the country to paint Easter eggs without any contents. This souvenir is called "kraslytsia" and can be used for several years in a row.

One of the most colourful and fun traditional customs is "pomlazka" - when men lightly whip women with willow branches decorated with ribbons to ensure their health and beauty for the whole year. In return, women give men Easter eggs or ribbons. This custom, although it may seem unusual, is playful and friendly.

For gourmets, Easter in Prague is an opportunity to enjoy traditional Czech dishes. The festive markets offer mazanec (sweet Easter bread), lamb and a wide range of local sweets. Don't forget to try Czech Easter beer, which is brewed only during this period.

Where to go in Prague for Easter?

In addition to markets, Prague offers many places to visit during the Easter holidays. Prague Castle, with its majestic palaces and St Vitus Cathedral, is a great backdrop for Easter walks. The Waldstein Gardens are another charming place to enjoy the spring blooms and tranquillity.

Also, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Charles Bridge in the early morning, when there are almost no tourists, and you can enjoy the views of the waking city in solitude. 

The Church of St Nicholas on Mala Krajina, with its magnificent baroque and impressive interior, is also worth a visit, and its architecture and acoustics make it the perfect place for the Easter classical music concerts that take place here during this period. These concerts offer a unique opportunity to experience spiritual revival through music in one of Prague's most beautiful churches.

For art lovers, Prague offers a rich cultural programme during the Easter period. The National Gallery and Kampa Museum offer special exhibitions dedicated to both Czech and international artists. The spring months are the perfect time to visit these cultural treasures, when the city is filled with new energy and life.

Nature lovers should pay attention to the Petřín Tower and the adjacent park. The top of the tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, and the park's green lawns are the perfect place for a picnic or just to enjoy the spring sun.

Easter is not only a time for reflection and spiritual renewal, but also a great opportunity to meet friends and family. Prague offers many cosy cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy your Easter lunch or dinner in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
