The pandemic of coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 broke out in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. A few months later, on March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 pandemic.
On May 5, 2023, the WHO announced that the coronavirus disease was no longer a global public health emergency of international concern, but continued to believe that the pandemic was not yet over. As of today, the vast majority of countries have lifted restrictions related to coronavirus infection, but people around the world continue to get sick.
How many people have had COVID-19: morbidity and mortality statistics
According to official statistics, as of March 11, 2024, almost 704 million people were infected with Covid-19, namely 703,996,641 people. The outbreak was recorded in 229 countries (including autonomous territories).
At the same time, 95.9% of those infected, namely 674,961,136 people, recovered. Unfortunately, for 1% of people, coronavirus infection was fatal. Thus, as of March 2024, more than 7 million people have died from Covid-19, namely 7,004,688 people.
In general, another 3.1% (over 22 million) of the world's population, namely 22,030,817 people, are currently ill.
It should be noted that in Ukraine, coronavirus infection was first diagnosed on March 3, 2020, in Chernivtsi, and on March 13 of the same year, the first death due to Covid-19 was recorded.
As of March 11, 2024, only 13.5% of the population in Ukraine, namely 5,557,995 people, had contracted the coronavirus. Of these, 98% (5,445,577 people) have recovered, and 2% (112,418 people) have died from the disease.
Since the first case of Covid-19 in Ukraine, at least 32.6 million tests have been performed to diagnose the disease.

Do I need Covid-19 travel insurance now?
Currently, Covid-19 insurance is not a prerequisite for entry in most countries, but authorities recommend that all travelers choose insurance policies that cover coronavirus cases, as the risk of infection remains worldwide.
It's also worth remembering that health insurance is the key to a tourist's confidence and safety while traveling. After all, an insurance policy will not only help you get high-quality medical care, but also save your own money in an unforeseen situation, for example, in case of a flight delay or loss of luggage at the airport.
You can buy travel insurance on the Visit Ukraine website. We offer health insurance policies for Ukrainians planning a trip abroad and military risk insurance for foreigners traveling to Ukraine.
