Poland intends to extend the period of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine until March 4, 2025, while updating their living conditions in the country. According to kresy.pl, the Ministry of the Interior has called on regional governors to submit their proposals for possible changes to special legislation.
We will tell you what changes they want to make for Ukrainian refugees in Poland in the article.
What do they propose to change for Ukrainians in Poland?
Toughening the rules of residence for refugees from Ukraine
The government aims to improve the rules of residence to prevent possible abuses. As you know, the rights of Ukrainian refugees to legal residence in Poland have been extended until the end of June, preserving the current conditions and benefits. However, it is planned to further reform these rules based on consultations with local government agencies.
According to the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, the Ministry of the Interior has asked governors for legislative initiatives that would help in formulating a new version of the amendments to the law on support for Ukrainians, focusing on extending protection and revising the rules of residence.
An analysis of the proposed changes and feedback from regional offices indicates the need to adapt support and strengthen enforcement.
Revocation of the right to legal residence for leaving the country
The Polish government is considering amending the rules of legal residence for Ukrainian refugees, in particular, it is proposed to revoke this right for those who travel to Ukraine even for one day. This decision is intended to prevent the abuse of social benefits. Currently, the right of residence is canceled after 30 days of staying outside Poland.
The Lubuskie voivode points out that frequent trips of Ukrainians for recreation, tourism or business indicate the absence of difficult life circumstances.
Another problem is that voivodeships keep separate registers of benefits paid, allowing one family to theoretically receive assistance from different sources. To solve this issue, it is proposed to create a single central register.

Cancellation of assistance to newcomers
Regional governors in Poland are advocating the abolition of the provision for the payment of a one-time allowance of 300 zlotys (about 2,856 UAH) per person to newly arrived refugees from Ukraine, intended to cover basic needs such as food, clothing, footwear, personal hygiene products and housing costs.
This initiative was aimed at helping people who were unexpectedly forced to flee their country due to the fighting, but according to social services, there are a growing number of people arriving with the intention of settling in the European Union rather than as emergency evacuations.
The governors also call for more thorough verification of people receiving assistance and revocation of protection status for those who do not meet financial obligations. It is noted that some Ukrainians do not cover the necessary costs for accommodation and food in reception centers.
It is also proposed to focus on supporting vulnerable groups, such as children, the sick and people with disabilities, and to remove from the legislation articles allowing double receipt of social benefits to avoid abuse.
It is known that there are currently approximately 1 million Ukrainians in Poland who arrived after the conflict began, as well as about 1.5 million people who lived in the country before the war.
