Protests by Polish farmers are gaining momentum. Last week, they began blocking not only freight transport but also passenger trains and buses. At the same time, the Polish government refused to meet with Ukrainian representatives at the border, promising to hold a meeting to resolve the blockade tomorrow, February 28.

At the same time, on February 26, Polish protesters blocked a checkpoint on the border with Germany and threatened to extend the blockade to the border with Lithuania. At the same time, Polish carriers also plan to return to protests this week.

Polish protesters threaten to block the borders with Lithuania and Germany: what is known?

On February 26, in protest, Polish farmers blocked a checkpoint on the border with Poland near Frankfurt am Oder. According to Ukrayinska Pravda, local police called on carriers and those traveling by car, in particular, to avoid the A12 highway if possible. After all, farmers have formed a multi-kilometer-long convoy of tractors at the Szwieczk border crossing in Poland. At the same time, on the German side, on the city bridge in Frankfurt am Oder, local farmers also blocked traffic with tractors, vans, and trucks. However, in Germany, farmers are protesting primarily against the planned reduction of subsidies for agricultural diesel fuel.

At the same time, LRT RADIO reports that Polish farmers are planning to block the checkpoint on the border with Lithuania. According to one of the co-organizers of the protest on the Lithuanian border, farmers will stop and physically check all vehicles that are likely to transport Ukrainian grain or other agricultural products.

"The protest action is to start on March 1 at 10 am. It will not be a complete blockade of the checkpoint. We, the farmers, together with the Polish authorities, want to check what is being transported in the trucks, paying special attention to those vehicles that have the potential to transport agricultural products. (...) If we see grain and other agricultural products coming, we would like to know where it is coming from, why and how, so that we can get a feel for the volume of transportation," explains a Polish farmer.

At the same time, Polish carriers, whose rally was suspended in January this year, plan to resume protests this week, on Friday, March 1. According to RMF FM, they plan to resume blocking the Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska, Dorohusk-Yagodyn, Korczowa-Krakowiec, and possibly Medyka-Shehyni checkpoints.

Latvia demands to ban russian grain and replace it with Ukrainian grain

Despite the fact that Polish farmers' protests against the transit of Ukrainian grain are spreading, the Latvian government has stated that the EU should impose sanctions against imports from russia at the European level. According to Ukrinform, citing Latvian Agriculture Minister Armands Krause, the country not only supports sanctions against russian grain imports, but also proposes to replace them with Ukrainian grain.

"Now we have these difficulties on the (Polish) border. We fully support Ukraine. From the point of view of the European Union, what is happening on the border is not clear," the Latvian minister emphasized. He added that by replacing russian grain with Ukrainian grain, "we will support Ukraine, not help russia feed its war machine."

Poles who scattered Ukrainian grain on the border stand trial

According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at the forum "Ukraine. The Year 2024" forum, the first offenders who spilled Ukrainian grain from grain trucks on the border with Poland have already been brought to trial. According to him, they face up to 5 years in prison.

Shmyhal added that Ukraine has not violated any laws, and Ukrainian grain does not enter the Polish market.
