According to the decision of the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the issuance of new driver's licenses and vehicle registration certificates was agreed upon at the end of 2023. This initiative was primarily intended to make it more difficult to produce counterfeit documents. Starting from today, August 1, 2024, drivers will start receiving new driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates. This was announced by Mykola Rudyk, Head of the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on the live TV channel Kyiv24. New format of driver's license and car registration certificate: what has changed?

One of the key changes is the presence of additional security features on the new documents. The forms of licenses and certificates now have a special security marking and a QR code in the lower right corner, which will allow you to check their legitimacy through the online service of the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After scanning the QR code, all the information entered into the electronic register will appear on the screen, including the series, document number, and vehicle data.

This will not only complicate the possibility of forgery, but will also facilitate quick verification of documents in real time.

"A special marking is added to the holographic image of the MIA emblem on the protective coating of the forms. It consists of three letters and six digits. This enhanced protection will significantly reduce the risk of document forgery,” said Mr. Rudyk.

As for the cost and validity of the new licenses, they remain unchanged, which is good news for drivers.

Can I use the old-style license and registration certificate?

The website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasizes that all documents previously issued at the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs remain valid and citizens can continue to use them. However, if they wish, they can apply to any convenient service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and exchange their driver's license and car registration certificate for a new model.

At the same time, drivers should remember that insurance is mandatory for all vehicles in Ukraine.
