On Sunday, February 4, the results of the voting in the final of the National Selection for Eurovision 2024, which took place on February 3, were announced. The winner will represent Ukraine at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest and will compete for the top spot with representatives from 36 countries.

It is worth noting that 723,297 viewers voted for the winner of the national selection, which is seven times more than for the second-place participant. That is, the gap was very large.

Who won the 2024 national selection in Ukraine?

Determining the winner was not without technical problems, as the Diia app crashed due to a large number of users trying to vote for their favorite. However, the votes were still counted. Thus, according to the results of the audience vote and the jury's assessment, Jerry Heil and alyona alyona with the song "Teresa & Maria" won the national selection of Ukraine for Eurovision 2024.

Jerry Heil and alyona alyona received 10 points from the jury: Andriy Danylko, Jamala and Serhiy Tanchynets, and 11 points from the audience.

Teresa & Maria: what is the essence of the conflict around the song?

The song "Teresa & Maria" has caused quite heated discussions in society. A considerable number of people did not appreciate the theme of the song and its performance, while bookmakers saw the winning potential in the track.

The conflict was caused by the song's reference to Mother Teresa, whose image in history is quite controversial. However, the singers responded to public comments and noted that their song is not autobiographical, and Mother Teresa appears there only as an image, not a person.

"Perhaps she was ambiguous. But the people who write it don't look at the situation from both sides - they don't know who was spreading this information. After they started writing to us, I looked into the matter and found out that it could have been promoted by India for religious and political reasons," said Alyona Alyona and added that Mother Teresa was mentioned only as a symbol of goodness.

In general, the song Teresa & Maria is understood by the singers as telling the story of Ukrainian women who carry a titanic weight on their shoulders.

"In the face of united women, we talk about the importance of unity between anyone for important actions and victories. And despite the fact that we, as Ukrainians, wrote this song about Ukraine, everyone in the world can recognize themselves in the lyrics. We are talking about any unification, because this is what creates synergy and brings much more results," the artists say.

Jerry Heil and alyona alyona: what do you know about them?

This is the third national selection for Ukrainian singer Jerry Heil. The first two were in 2020 and 2022. For rapper alyona alyona, it was her debut.

It should be noted that the singers have released eight joint tracks, played a joint tour in the United States, presented the album Dai Boh in collaboration with European artists and conquered the charts on streaming platforms: the total number of listens to joint tracks reaches more than 50 million.

When is Eurovision 2024?

Eurovision 2024 will take place in the Swedish city of Malmö. The first and second semifinals are scheduled for May 7 and 9, and the grand final is on May 11.
