Latvia has begun the process of deporting 985 russian citizens who have not complied with immigration laws.

Latvia deports russians: details

According to the LSM, these individuals were sent letters inviting them to leave or formalize their legal status in Latvia within two weeks.

The reason for the deportation is that the russian citizens did not meet the requirements for the state language exam and did not apply for another type of residence permit. This information is sent to the State Border Guard Service, which checks whether the person is at his or her last declared place of residence.

The head of the Department of Citizenship and Migration, Myra Rose, said that those who have not tried to regularize their legal status can apply for another type of residence permit, for example, on the basis of marriage or family reunification.

"We are now talking only about voluntary departure. This means that any person should be given the right to leave voluntarily from the very beginning. Unless it is in the interests of national security. If a person does not do anything and does not appeal, then there may be a forced expulsion," - said Rose.

So far, two russians have already been ordered forcibly deported, but most russian citizens have decided to regularize their status by applying or passing a language test. 

Gunārs Kutris, chairman of the Latvian Saeima's Committee on Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion, confirmed that "there will definitely be forced expulsions." 

The Citizenship and Migration Board believes that some of those to be deported may have already left Latvia.
