A large part of the Czech Republic's highways are tolled, but the tolls for using such roads in the Czech Republic differ from those in most other European countries. Thus, drivers must have a special road vignette to use such roads.

We will tell you which roads in the Czech Republic are tolled, how to pay the toll, how much it costs, and who is exempt from paying - further in the article.

Which roads in the Czech Republic are tolled?

What is a road vignette and how to use it?

In order to drive on toll roads in the Czech Republic, drivers of passenger cars weighing up to 3.5 tons are required to purchase an electronic road vignette (elektronická dálniční známka), which serves as a proof of payment of the toll. Thus, payment by means of a vignette is limited in time, but not in the distance that a driver can drive on toll roads. In this case, the vignette must be fixed on the windshield of the car in the lower right corner. 

The presence of payment is checked by cameras on the roads that scan license plates and transmit the data to the State Automobile Inspectorate. If the vignette is missing or expired, the driver will be fined.

Trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons are required to have special devices for automatic toll payment when entering toll roads.

Motorcycles do not need to pay for the use of toll roads.

How do I buy a vignette for toll roads in the Czech Republic?

You can buy a vignette online on the official website, at post offices and gas stations, as well as in self-service machines. Places where vignettes are sold are marked with a special sign.

The cost of a vignette for a vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tons will depend on its validity period:

▶ D - 10-day vignette (valid for 10 consecutive calendar days) - CZK 310 or ~€12.5

▶ M - 30-day vignette (valid for 30 consecutive calendar days) - CZK 440 or ~€18

▶ R - annual vignette (valid from December 1 of the previous calendar year to January 31 of the following calendar year) - CZK 1500 or ~€60.5

In this case, the start of the vignette can be postponed for three months, i.e., you can choose the date of the document's start when purchasing it.

When purchasing a vignette, you need to select the validity period and specify it:

– SRNP (state registration number plate) and the country of registration of the car;

– the beginning of the vignette's validity period;

– whether you are eligible for the Green Price (for cars running on natural gas or biomethane).

After entering all the data and making the payment, the driver will receive a confirmation email. After that, you can hit the road.

Who doesn't need a vignette in the Czech Republic?

During the period of martial law in Ukraine, in connection with the full-scale invasion of the russian federation, passenger vehicles used for humanitarian purposes are exempt from paying for an electronic road vignette.

Thus, drivers of passenger cars weighing up to 3.5 tons must have the appropriate documents to confirm the fact of transportation of humanitarian cargo in case of vehicle inspection.

Trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons must report every humanitarian trip online. Before the trip, they need to fill out a special table on the website www.mytocz.eu and then send it to the email address ua@czechtoll.cz.
