While airspace over Ukraine remains closed, airlines have decided to establish a hub at Chisinau International Airport. Planes of two Ukrainian carriers are based here, avianews.com reports.
Currently, Ukrainian planes are flying on behalf of Moldovan airlines. Five passenger planes from Ukraine, owned by SkyUp and Windrose, operate in Chisinau.
Base of Ukrainian airlines in Chisinau
The Windrose carrier has deployed two of its aircraft in the Moldovan capital, a Boeing 737-800 and a Boeing 737-900, which serve the passengers of the Moldovan airline Flyone.
SkyUp has deployed three of its eight aircraft in Chisinau. Currently, three Boeing 737-800 aircraft are based in Moldova, operating flights on behalf of HiSky and Flyone.
In addition, another SkyUp aircraft is based in Chisinau, but it is part of a unit registered in Malta and also serves Flyone passengers.
All five Ukrainian aircraft in Moldova operate under wet lease. This is a form of aircraft lease in which the carrier provides the aircraft along with maintenance and crew. For this, the airline receives a fixed fee. At the same time, the commercial risks for ticket sales are borne by the flight customer.
This type of lease, especially when the skies over Ukraine remain closed and flights are banned, is beneficial for Ukrainian airlines. It allows them to maintain staff qualifications and continue operations. And when the skies become safe, flights can be resumed quickly.
When will airplanes be able to fly safely over Ukraine?
As you know, leaders in the global aviation industry are expressing their readiness to return to the Ukrainian aviation market, which may mark a new stage in the resumption of air traffic in the country.
Airlines ready to return to Ukraine as soon as possible:
• Ryanair (Ireland)
• LOT (Poland)
• Turkish Airlines (Turkey)
• Air Baltic (Latvia)
• SkyUp (Ukraine)
• Lufthansa (Germany)
According to Boryspil Airport CEO Oleksiy Dubrevsky, Ukraine's main airport is ready to resume operations and operate flights again as soon as possible.
Although flights will be possible only after the war is over, it will take little time to resume air traffic.
