On December 19, 2023, at around 9 a.m., a Boeing 777-300 passenger plane took off from Boryspil International Airport. Moreover, the airport's press service notes that despite the closed skies over Ukraine, this is the fourth successful flight of a passenger plane since the full-scale invasion.
Why and where did the plane take off from Boryspil?
The Boeing 777-300 flew to one of the European airports at the request of Skyline Express, the company that uses it. The press service noted that it was a technical transfer of the aircraft, which had been at the airport since February 24, 2022, and had been undergoing constant technical support and maintenance. They also note that there was no cargo or passengers on board.

"The flight adhered to the highest standards of aviation safety and security, in accordance with the directives in force at the time of the introduction of martial law in Ukraine, and, it should be noted, without passengers or cargo on board," the airport assures.

When will Ukraine's skies open to passenger planes?
The head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak, has repeatedly made statements about the possible resumption of flights from Boryspil Airport. Moreover, on December 1, he assured that the international airport would soon be receiving and sending aircraft again, as Ukraine is now able to ensure the safety of this facility. He made a similar statement during his visit to the United States.
It has also recently become known that the airport has opened dozens of different vacancies. So does this mean that flights will resume?
According to Boryspil's press service, Ukraine is currently implementing a comprehensive security architecture concept aimed at ensuring the necessary aviation safety and security standards under martial law.
"This technical overhaul of the aircraft at Boryspil not only contributes to testing the recovery policy, but is also a strategic step for Ukrainian airlines, helping them to reduce costs and improve their chances of survival in a difficult aviation environment," the statement said, adding that this strategic initiative "paves the way for the resumption of regular operations as soon as the appropriate risk assessment allows it."
So it is possible that Ukraine will be able to resume flights even in times of war. To ensure that your trip to Ukraine is as safe as possible, we recommend that you take care of reliable health insurance in advance. On the Visit Ukraine website, you can take out an insurance policy covering military risks, which will guarantee compensation in case of an accident or other injuries related to direct or passive military risks.
We remind you! Boryspil International Airport, a former leader in passenger traffic, is now strikingly empty. In his program "The World Inside Out", host Dmytro Komarov showed the devastation of Terminal D, which was devastated by the full-scale invasion. See what the airport looks like now, where life used to be in full swing in our previous article.
