The fact that russian weapons contain more foreign parts than russian ones has been stated repeatedly. Both Ukrainian and Western experts have stated this. However, after the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) published a database of foreign components in russian weapons, it became clear that there are almost no russian parts in these weapons. Instead, almost 75% of all components are manufactured by companies registered in the United States.

Why don't sanctions work?

Despite the fact that the export of dual-use products, which include various chips, circuit boards and microcircuits, has been banned in russia, russia continues to manufacture weapons from foreign components. First of all, experts attribute this to re-exports through the countries of Southeast Asia. The second reason is that russia employs a large number of people who smuggle sanctioned electronics into russia.

And unfortunately, it is currently impossible to take control of all these production and supply chains, as there is no full control over compliance with the sanctions regime. In addition, the West and Ukraine do not currently fully understand the methods of circumventing sanctions used by russia, and for each violation, they are looking for individual tools to help counteract these schemes.

What countries' parts are found in russian weapons?

In general, almost 30 countries help russia manufacture weapons. The United States is among the largest "importers" of components, accounting for almost 75% of all parts found in russian weapons, which in terms of units is 1813 out of 2453 parts, including microcircuits, transistors, and capacitors.

At the same time, russia itself produces only 13 parts out of the entire list that the NACP investigated. These are mainly GPS and navigation receivers for some types of UAVs and "bodies" for missiles.

In addition to parts from companies registered in the United States, at least

- 119 parts from Switzerland

- 96 from Japan

- 87 from China

- 78 from Germany

- 62 from the Netherlands

- 59 from Taiwan

As well as various details from companies registered in the UK, Korea, France, Belgium, North Korea, Thailand, Italy, Israel, Sweden, Singapore, Canada, Portugal, Turkey, Belarus, Spain, Poland, Denmark, the Philippines, Uzbekistan and Ireland.

Thus, limiting russia's access to resources used in the production of weapons is a critical issue for both Ukraine and its allies. In fact, all those UAVs and missiles flying at Ukrainian civilian cities would not have been created if russia did not have access to Western technologies.
