Ukrainian refugees currently staying in the UK face a real risk of being left without shelter for the winter. This is reported by The Guardian.

According to a study conducted by the British Red Cross and Heriot-Watt University, Ukrainian families are four times more likely to be homeless than other families in the country.

The report by the charity and Heriot-Watt University raises serious concerns and emphasizes the need for additional funding for Ukrainian families to prevent the rapid increase in homelessness. 

It is projected that by the end of March 2024, 6,220 Ukrainian refugee families may be seeking assistance to avoid becoming homeless, a 13% increase over the last fiscal year.

Researchers have found that Ukrainian families face a four times higher risk of homelessness compared to other families in Britain. The reasons for this phenomenon include the end of sponsorship, language barriers and difficulties in understanding the rental market.

"This winter we expect thousands of people from Ukraine to become homeless in the UK," said Olivia Field, Head of Policy and Advocacy at the British Red Cross.

The British Red Cross emphasizes that more than 192,000 Ukrainians have already arrived in the country under two major government programs - Homes for Ukraine and the Ukraine Family Scheme. 

However, unfortunately, many Ukrainians have difficulty getting the help they need to find long-term housing, and they often cannot cover the upfront costs of rent. 

The British Red Cross is calling for the continuation of "thank you payments" to landlords until the third year of the Homes for Ukraine program, and for local authorities to support the provision of rent guarantees and increased housing subsidies for Ukrainians.
