Vorübergehender Schutz bis 2025: Können ukrainische Flüchtlinge länger in der Tschechischen Republik bleiben?

The European Union has announced that by 2025 it will end its provision of temporary protection to Ukrainian citizens staying in EU countries. This decision has prompted a number of countries to carefully consider possible future scenarios for Ukrainians who have found refuge abroad.

This raises the question of how the status of Ukrainians in the EU and, in particular, in the Czech Republic will be resolved after 2025. 

Will the Czech Republic be able to shelter Ukrainians after 2025?

The country is considering the option that some Ukrainians may decide to stay within its borders even after the temporary protection is terminated. 

The country's authorities are actively discussing this possibility, and Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has expressed the opinion that it is necessary to find a European common approach to this issue.  He noted that individual decisions of each country could lead to competition and conflicts between them in attracting Ukrainians who wish to stay.

Rakushan also noted that Ukrainians will not be forced to leave the country in case of termination of temporary protection. Instead, they plan to create special conditions for those who wish to stay by developing a thorough scheme for their further residence.

"I can't imagine a situation where one day people will just be told: "Go home, everyone". Obviously, many people from Ukraine are interested in returning. Between September and October, the number of people from Ukraine on our territory decreased by about 14 thousand," emphasized Vit Rakusan.

The experience of other migration crises shows that some Ukrainians will already have established ties with the Czech Republic, including education for children and economic stability. Such persons should be given the opportunity to stay in the country in accordance with a clearly developed strategy. 

At the same time, the Czech Republic is not actively promoting mass migration of Ukrainians, as Ukraine will also need to return a significant part of its population to rebuild and develop the country after the war.
