The Latvian government has restricted the presence of cars with russian registration on its territory by approving the relevant amendments to the Law on Road Traffic during the first reading. This was reported by Delfi.

Latvia bans cars with russian license plates: details

The draft law aimed at banning cars with russian registration stipulates that owners of vehicles registered in the russian federation must either re-register them in Latvia or take them abroad within three months from the date of entry into force of the law. 

After the transitional period, cars with russian license plates will have the right to drive on Latvian roads only in one case: during transit through its territory.

It is noted that the Ministry of Justice of Latvia considers the presence of russian vehicles on its territory as unacceptable, given the russian aggression against Ukraine, the outbreak of war and the threat to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of other countries.

In addition, russian cars often do not meet the technical standards of the European Union, which can threaten road safety on Latvian roads.

The Latvian authorities plan to introduce amendments to the law on November 15. From that moment on, cars with russian registration will have to leave the country by February 15, 2024.

As you know, all the Baltic states and several other countries have already imposed restrictions on the entry of cars with russian registration into their territory. In particular, Finland, Norway, Poland, and Bulgaria have introduced similar measures.

Russian cars currently trying to cross the Latvian border are being turned around and demanded to return to russia. However, there is an option for drivers and passengers to cross the border on foot, but the car may be confiscated.

It is emphasized that russian cars continue to use the Kaliningrad transit train to get to the European Union via Lithuania.
