Every year on October 17, the world celebrates the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which aims to draw attention to one of the most pressing and urgent problems of our time. Poverty is a global challenge, and Ukraine has not stayed away from this struggle. After the start of russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the country faced serious challenges in this area.

Official statistics show that the poverty rate in Ukraine has increased since the start of the war. This is due to job losses, inflation, and a deteriorating economic situation. Many Ukrainian citizens have found themselves at or below the poverty line.

According to a World Bank report, the poverty rate in Ukraine increased from 5.5% to 24.2% in 2022. Thus, one in four Ukrainians is below the poverty line. 

The total number of such people is 7.1 million, The Guardian writes with reference to the report.

What led to this?

According to experts at the World Bank, food, fuel, and services have risen sharply in price in Ukraine since the outbreak of full-scale war, some of them by as much as 50%.

In addition, they note that unemployment in Ukraine is unofficially 36%, and inflation reached 26.6% at the end of 2022, so in the future, more and more Ukrainians may find themselves below the poverty line.

According to analysts' forecasts, the poverty rate in the country could rise to 55%. That is, every second person may fall below the poverty line.

However, if we analyze this indicator, there is a large gap between cities and villages. The effects of impoverishment are most noticeable in rural areas.

At the same time, according to specialized experts, the situation could have been much worse if not for international financial assistance to Ukraine.

What was the poverty rate before?

"Slovo i Dilo" analyzed the data and came up with the following figures: 

In 2006-2007, the poverty rate in Ukraine, according to the World Bank, was even higher than during the full-scale war - 26.6% and 26.4%, respectively.

In 2008, the poverty rate was estimated at 19.3%. Then the number of people living below the poverty line in Ukraine decreased: 2010 - 15.2%, 2011 - 12.4%, 2012 - 11%, 2013 - 8.4%.

In 2014-2016, the poverty rate in the country began to rise again, reaching 15.4% in 2016.

In 2017, 10.8% of Ukraine's population lived below the poverty line, in 2018 - 9.4%, in 2019-2020 - 7.1%.

In 2021, before the outbreak of full-scale war, Ukraine had the best poverty rate - only 5.5%. Last year, according to the World Bank, it rose to 24.1%.
