The russian military is preparing for a new missile strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Last year's power outages were accompanied by the loss of mobile communications and the Internet. Find out if we are ready for such situations.
What are the problems?
At present, only 37% of Ukrainian subscribers are connected to internet networks that can withstand long power outages.
This is the average figure across Ukraine. For example, in Kyiv, Rivne and Ternopil regions, it is about 60%, and in Kyiv it is 9%, which Yuriy Matsyk, Director of the Department for the Development of Fixed Internet at the Ministry of Digital Transformation, calls a "critical situation".
This low number is due to the fact that Ukraine is using old technology that does not support PON. He added that the Ministry of Digital Transformation is now encouraging Kyiv operators to develop their networks more actively. The growth rate of PON subscribers in Ukraine in 2022 is 28%.
To ensure uninterrupted internet access, the Ministry of Digital Transformation advises customers to check whether their provider has switched to an energy-efficient internet network (xPON). If not, you can apply for a connection to another service provider nearby. You should also purchase an external battery to power your Wi-Fi router.
Schedule of scheduled Internet outages in Kyiv in winter
DTEK Kyiv Power Grids has announced the schedule of power outages in the capital. According to published data, in the event of a rolling or emergency power outage, a four-hour blackout is expected.
At the same time, DTEK said that no power cuts are currently planned. These schedules were created to prepare Kyiv residents for possible blackouts during shelling of critical infrastructure.
As of the beginning of October, there is no need for power outages, as electricity consumption during the day is even surplus.

Tips for ensuring Internet access during blackouts
● Connect to an energy-saving internet network: Check with your ISP to see if they use xPON technology, which provides resilient internet access during blackouts. If your provider has not yet adopted this technology, consider switching providers.
● Make friends with your neighbours: If you and your neighbours are interested in a reliable internet connection, consider co-operating to connect to an energy-saving network. By joining together, you can provide consistent access for your entire community.
● Provide a power source for the router: Purchase a power bank or other uninterruptible power supply for your Wi-Fi router. Even when the operator provides Internet, it is important to ensure that the router is powered during blackouts to avoid losing connection.
In this difficult time for Ukraine, maintaining access to the Internet is becoming a necessity for all citizens. Any challenges can only be overcome through national unity and mutual support. By taking steps to ensure a stable Internet connection in the face of outages, we are defending our independence and resilience. Let our responsibility to the country be our patriotic contribution to the future of Ukraine.
