At the initiative of the WHO, the first Monday of October is celebrated as International Medical Day. It is a day of solidarity and action for doctors around the world. In 2023, World Medical Day falls on October 2. The medical profession is complex and responsible, and is one of the oldest professions. Its importance cannot be underestimated.
World Medical Day is a good opportunity to thank doctors for their important and valuable work, to wish them good health, resilience and professional success.
We are going to tell you about the importance of this holiday and how doctors work in real life and in war.
History of the holiday
Doctors first appeared in russia in ancient times, when there was no medicine in the modern sense. Back then, people were treated with herbs, tinctures, and conspiracies.
By the way, the word "doctor" is translated from Old Slavonic as "to mutter, to speak".
The holiday was established in 1971 at the initiative of the UN World Health Organization and the international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières. The holiday is specifically dedicated to recognizing the achievements of doctors of all levels and specialties.
In order to protect yourself from unexpected expenses, we advise you to take care of reliable health insurance in advance.
Why is this day important?
The main purpose of this holiday is to draw people's attention to the role of doctors in society. In recent years, the work of doctors has become especially important. The coronavirus pandemic has placed extremely high demands on doctors, both physically and morally, and they often sacrifice their own lives to save their patients.
In addition to treating patients' bodies, doctors give them valuable advice and help them overcome fears and anxieties in difficult health situations.
On International Day of the Doctor, the media publish amazing stories of outstanding doctors, and medical schools organize open days to which applicants are especially invited.
As a result, for young people who plan to choose medicine as a lifelong career, understanding the pros and cons of the medical profession is crucial to avoid becoming a victim.
In addition to a professional holiday, this event allows them to reflect on the problems that modern doctors face at work. At least in Ukraine, there are many such problems, such as emigration of professional staff abroad due to low salaries, insufficient state funding for healthcare, and the war due to russian aggression. In these difficult conditions, we must support doctors and respect their work.

Heroes without arms: combat medics of Ukraine
Combat medics are specialized medical personnel who work on the front line during military conflicts. Their role is to provide assistance to wounded soldiers directly on the battlefield. They respond quickly to critical situations, stop bleeding, provide first aid and carry the wounded out of dangerous areas.
The importance of combat medics
Combat medics perform work that can save the lives of soldiers. Their courage and professionalism help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries among servicemen. They work in the most difficult conditions and often risk their own lives to save others.
In unrealistic situations without medicines, equipment and human resources, military medics did everything in their power. They operated, stopped bleeding, stitched up mutilated bodies, treated wounds, shared what little medicine they had to save as many lives as possible, and provided moral support to the wounded.
They had no weapons to defend themselves. They acted in accordance with international law and human rights. Many doctors have been captured and held in inhumane conditions for almost two years.
The fact of their detention has not yet been officially confirmed by the russian federation, although some of them regularly appear in russian propaganda videos.
The International Day of the Doctor is a great time to express our gratitude and recognition to Ukraine's combat medics for their extremely important work. Their dedication and heroism deserve our full support and gratitude.
Ukrainian medics are not only doctors, but also people who are willing to risk their own lives to save others. They work in an environment where the sounds of explosions and gunfire are becoming the norm for them. These extremely brave professionals provide medical care to wounded soldiers, civilians and anyone else who needs help.
Today, on the International Day of the Doctor, we express our sincere gratitude to Ukraine's medical professionals for their invaluable work, courage and sacrifice. May their contribution to the healthcare sector and the security of our country always be recognized and honored. May they always return home safe and free from painful memories.
Glory to Ukraine!
