Recently, Germany has seen a significant increase in the incidence of coronavirus. According to the data, as of September 15, the number of infected people per 100,000 people over a 7-day period is 9.
The article below describes which variants of the virus are currently most common in the country and whether local residents need to be vaccinated.
Coronavirus in Germany: what vaccinations are recommended
Currently, the most common variants of the virus in the country are Eris (Eg.5), a descendant of Omicron, and a new strain of the virus called Pirola (BA.2.86), which has undergone an even greater mutation than Omicron. The new coronavirus variant was first detected in Germany in September 2023.
Pfizer\Biontech has developed a vaccine adapted to the XBB.1.5 subvariant of the Omicron virus, which is very similar to the Eris strain.
It is noted that the vaccine for people aged 12 years and older and children under 5 years old is already available, and the vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 is expected to be available on October 2.

Who is advised to get vaccinated?
● People over the age of 60;
● people who live in care facilities;
● people with concomitant diseases;
● relatives of patients at risk;
● healthcare workers.
It is noted that you need to be vaccinated only 12 months after the last vaccination or infection.
Where to go for vaccination?
You can get vaccinated through your general practitioner or Hausarzt.
The entitlement to free vaccination is based on Stiko recommendations, so in federal states where compensation for coronavirus vaccination is not yet regulated, patients first receive a private bill of about 35 euros for revaccination.
After that, it is necessary to submit the bill to the health insurer and receive a cash reimbursement.

Should we expect a new coronavirus epidemic this fall?
Experts note that in Germany, people have a fairly high level of immunity from vaccinations and infections, which prevents the possibility of a severe form of the disease.
However, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach reminds us that the coronavirus is not a common cold, so it should be taken seriously.
Will we have to wear masks again in Germany?
Wearing masks is unlikely to be reintroduced. However, even though wearing masks is not mandatory, it is a good protection option for people with weak immune systems.
However, experts note that in the event of a rapid increase in the incidence rate, the requirement to wear masks at all times may be introduced in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
We remind you! Earlier, we wrote that Germany will increase benefits for refugees from Ukraine starting next year. Find out more about the new amounts of money Ukrainians will be able to receive here.
