In Ukraine, in the context of a full-scale war, the defense industry plays a key role in ensuring national security. However, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of russia, this sector has faced serious challenges, one of which is the lack of personnel. Let's find out where the specialists have gone and what needs to be done to increase the flow of workers into this important industry for Ukraine.
According to Ekonomichna Pravda, despite the state's multibillion-dollar investments in the domestic defense industry, the growth of this industry requires expanding the workforce, and this is not easy to do in the face of a labor shortage.
In a commentary to the publication, one of the armor manufacturers said that the company he works for has doubled its staff since the beginning of the full-scale war and still faces a shortage of some specialists, such as experienced armor welders.
Why is there a shortage of personnel in the defense industry?
It is noted that the shortage of personnel has arisen against the backdrop of rapid growth in the military-industrial sector, as more and more orders have recently come from the state.
In addition, there are several other reasons for this problem:
1. Demographics. The birth rate is declining in Ukraine, and migration has increased during the war.
2. The decline of the defense industry. The industry first suffered from the collapse of the USSR, and then from unstable government procurement.
3. Decline in the prestige of the profession.
At the same time, some companies claim that it has become easier for them to find young workers for certain specialties because they want to be useful to the state. In particular, we are talking about drone manufacturers.
As you know, the government is now making every effort to significantly expand the production of UAVs and other unmanned systems. To this end, it has even created programs that can sponsor a successful startup.

What is needed to replenish the defense industry with experienced personnel?
For example, Ukraine already practices improving working conditions at defense plants. So now this industry is more likely to offer above-average salaries, which is already encouraging young minds to work for the state.
"EP", analyzing the situation in many defense industries, concludes that the average age of workers in the defense industry exceeds 50 years. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government is preparing the nation for a long war.
Given these facts, a logical step on the part of Ukraine would be to shift the educational process to a military orientation. Armaments manufacturers are already trying to engage students in useful work, but they face nuances, in particular, related to English language skills, which are very important in the aviation sector.
It is also important for the state to increase the development of scholarship programs and financial support for students and young professionals who have chosen a career in the defense industry.
Of course, the war of engineers is a huge challenge for Ukraine, but with the right efforts and investments, the country can restore its potential in the defense industry. Strategic actions to attract and support specialists will help strengthen national security and ensure the country's long-term development.
Earlier, we wrote that drones, simulators, artificial intelligence, robots, and multicopters play a very important role in warfare today. Read more about military-tech developments that help the Armed Forces of Ukraine bring Ukraine's victory closer here.
