The Ukrainian military continues to carry out precision strikes on the russian army's deep rear. Most of all missiles fall on the occupiers in occupied Crimea. We tell you why the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) destroys the enemy in the rear areas and whether the strikes will continue.
It is worth recalling that over the past few weeks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine increasingly began to attack the russians in Crimea and other occupied cities, which are at a decent distance from the front.
At the same time, while earlier the russians were attacked by drones, today they are also attacked by missiles, both Western-made and Ukrainian.
Why are the Ukrainian armed forces attacking the russian rear?
There are several reasons for the Ukrainian military's long-range strikes. However, Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, in an interview with The Economist, names three goals of the attacks:
- depletion of russian air defenses;
- disabling russian military transport and bombers, as well as defense companies;
- a psychological goal.
"To sow anxiety among the population and disrupt russia's economic processes. The closure of major airports in St. Petersburg and Moscow, for example, has become an almost daily occurrence," Budanov added.
In addition, the intelligence chief noted that Ukraine is preparing to respond to russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Ukraine is working on a limited deterrence and retaliation posture to counter an expected winter campaign of russian missile and drone strikes on infrastructure.
"Let them start. They will also get a response," the head of the Defense Ministry's GSD said when asked about possible russian strikes on Ukrainian critical infrastructure.

Will the AFU strikes continue?
Budanov also answered this question as well. According to him, the Ukrainian Defense Forces will continue to launch strikes on russia's rear in order to destroy military facilities and deplete air defense.
It should also be noted that the AFU attacks on Crimea and the russian Black Sea fleet led to the breakthrough of the rf naval blockade. After a number of successful operations, Ukrainian grain began to be exported by sea to other countries again.
Thus, the russian rear-guard attacks have been very useful for Ukraine, and they are likely to continue, as well as be improved.
What "fat" targets has Ukraine hit recently?
After Ukraine's successful attacks on rf airfields on August 19, 12 and 30, the Ukrainian military did not take a pause and continued to destroy the enemy in the captured territories.
For example, on September 13, during a successful special operation, Ukraine destroyed two russian ships at the repair base of the Sevmorzavod dry dock. According to experts, the large landing ship Minsk was completely functionally destroyed, while the diesel-electric submarine Rostov-on-Don, from which russia attacked Ukraine with Kalibras, "suffered catastrophic damage."
Already on September 22, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a successful missile strike on the headquarters of russia's Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol.
According to Budanov, the operation killed at least nine people and wounded 16 others, among them russian generals.
Among the wounded Alexander Romanchuk is the commander of the grouping of the russian army in the Zaporozhye direction, received the rank of Colonel General in 2023, as well as Oleg Tsekov - commander of the 200th separate motorized rifle brigade of the Coastal troops of the Northern Fleet of the russian navy.
We remind you! Recently Ukraine celebrated the Day of Military Intelligence. On the occasion of the holiday Visit Ukraine told about the most successful operations of the Defense Ministry's GUR fighters in recent times. Read more about it here.
