Poland is likely to cut financial support for millions of Ukrainian refugees starting in 2024. The official representative of the government, Piotr Mueller, told the Polish channel Polsat. 

According to him, the current rules will cease to apply in 2024. 

"We would like to remind you that the rules are temporary and expire at the beginning of next year. Nothing is permanent, only for the duration of the ongoing armed conflict, and the provisions simply expire at the beginning of next year," Mueller said.

It is assumed that the termination of support for Ukrainians may be related to the "grain crisis" that is worsening relations between the two countries.

In particular, sources indicate that this situation may be caused by the deterioration of relations between Poland and Ukraine before the upcoming elections in Poland scheduled for October 2023.

As you know, Poland was one of Ukraine's most important allies and provided significant support in the fight against russian aggression. The country's assistance included financial and military aid, as well as providing access to Western arms supplies through its territory. 

In particular, support for refugees from Ukraine currently includes the abolition of residence and work permit requirements, free access to schools for Ukrainian children, medical care, and family assistance.

Relations between Poland and Ukraine are deteriorating: details

Peter Müller emphasized that financial support for refugees, including the lifting of restrictions on residence and work, access to education, health care and family benefits, will not be extended in 2024.

Deputy Minister of Family and Social Policy Anna Schmidt said that Poland has already spent about 2.4 billion zlotys (approximately $550 million) to help Ukrainian families who sought refuge within its borders to escape the military conflict, Bloomberg reports.

Next year, this financial support is likely to be reduced.

Analysts note that such a decision could lead to an even greater deterioration of relations between the two countries, especially after the decision of the Polish Law and Justice party to extend the ban on grain imports from Ukraine, without complying with the decision of the European Union.
