Today, terrorism is turning from an isolated incident into a mass phenomenon, becoming an integral part of global political and economic processes. Terrorist activities are carried out not only by individuals and organizations, but also by states. We are talking about the events of the September 11 terrorist attack, the fight against terrorism, and what each of us should remember.

The importance of fighting terrorism

Since 2008, September 11 has been marked annually as the World Day Against Terrorism in memory of the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001. The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon building in Washington changed the course of world history.

Thousands of innocent people died. In response to this horrific act, an initiative was launched to establish a Global Day of Action against Terrorism.

All acts of terrorism involve violence or the threat of violence and are usually directed against civilians. Terrorist attacks are usually politically motivated and carried out in such a way as to attract as much public attention as possible.

Today, terrorism has evolved from an isolated incident to a mass phenomenon and has become part of the global political and economic process.

The World Day Against Terrorism is a reminder that terrorism knows no borders and affects each of us. A day designed to draw attention to serious issues affecting the global coexistence of all countries is undoubtedly of great importance.

Twin Towers in the United States: what is known about the September 11 terrorist attack

On the morning of September 11, 4 groups of nineteen suicide bombers hijacked four planes of two major American airlines. The terrorists deliberately crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

A fire inside the building melted the steel structures and caused it to collapse.

The hijackers flew the third plane into the Pentagon building near Washington, destroying part of the US Department of Defense headquarters.

After learning of the fate of the other planes, the passengers and crew of the fourth plane attacked the hijackers and crashed the plane in a deserted field near Shanksville.

The destruction of the World Trade Center and the surrounding infrastructure dealt a serious blow to the economy of Lower Manhattan and had a significant impact on global markets. Debris removal operations lasted 9 months.

The United States launched a war on terrorism and invaded Afghanistan to oust the Taliban, who were harboring members of the al-Qaeda terrorist group that carried out the attack.

The leader of the group, Osama bin Laden, initially denied any involvement in the attacks, but in 2004 he claimed responsibility for them. In May 2011, he was killed.

What is now at the site of the tragedy?

After the terrorist attacks of 2001, Manhattan lost one of its landmarks, the two World Trade Center skyscrapers.

Various projects were proposed to fill the "void" in the center of New York. Thus, a new 100-storey skyscraper, the Freedom Tower, was built on the site of the twin towers.

The new World Trade Center became the third tallest skyscraper in the world. The building's foundation was reinforced with a steel frame, and the first few floors were poured with concrete.

In addition to WTC 1, the new complex includes a memorial and museum dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks.

Ukrainians are victims of a terrorist attack

September 11, 2001 was a black date in the history of the United States and the world. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives as a result of the tragic event. Ukrainians were among them.

In particular, the names of the following people are known among the victims of the terrorist attack: Elena Belelovskaya, Alexander Braginsky, Marina Geruberg, Gennady Boyarsky, Yuri Muchinsky, Vladimir Savinkin, Boris Khalif, Lyudmila Ksido, Igor Zukerman, Tatiana Bakalinskaya, Ivan Skala and Oleg Vengerchuk.

These 12 people were innocent victims of a horrific terrorist act, and their loss has left an indelible mark on the hearts of their families and friends. Ukraine has expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and expressed solidarity with the American people in this difficult time.

Terrorism in the modern world: russia is a terrorist state

In recent years, Ukraine has suffered more from russian terrorism than any other country. Terrorist attacks claim lives almost every day.

The Ukrainian State Institute of Memory provides examples of russia's terrorist activities in Ukraine:

- persecution, torture and illegal imprisonment of Ukrainian citizens and Euromaidan activists in Crimea in 2014;

- torture and murder of Horlivka City Council member Volodymyr Rybak and young football player Stepan Chubenko in Donbas;

- the downing of the Malaysia Airlines plane, which killed all 298 passengers and crew;

Despite the available evidence, the terrorist country has not yet pleaded guilty to these crimes.

After the all-out invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, russia intensified terrorist acts with signs of genocide, such as torture, murder, rape, and forced displacement of the population in the occupied territories.

Some of the most egregious examples of terrorism are the killing in Olenivka of at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war who left Azovstal under UN and Red Cross security and exchange guarantees, and the use of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to make nuclear threats to the world.

The victims of daily massive missile strikes and bombings were residents of every city in Ukraine, and in some cities, entire buildings were left standing.

On April 14, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized russia as a terrorist state. In the international community, Lithuania and Latvia also recognized russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

The modern world has many events and threats that have affected its development and security. However, among all these challenges, one exerts constant pressure on the international community, becoming the main terrorist in the modern world - russia.

From the Crimean annexation in 2014 to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, interference in its sovereignty and internal affairs, as well as systematic human rights violations, russia has become the greatest threat to world order and international security and the epicenter of terrorism.

Because of the actions of the aggressor country and its strategy of global terrorism, the war in Ukraine requires immediate attention and decisive action by the international community!
