Despite the fact that russia tried to destroy Ukraine as an independent state, the full-scale invasion caused the opposite processes, including in the attitude of Ukrainians towards the state, the attributes of its independence and Ukrainian cultural traditions. Today, Ukrainians are experiencing perhaps the highest level of patriotism since the country's independence. 

As part of the study of the identity of Ukrainian citizens, the Razumkov Center surveyed Ukrainians and found out how their attitudes toward their country and national traditions have changed.

How do Ukrainians feel about state symbols and attributes of Ukraine's independence?

Compared to the pre-war years, the share of those who are proud of Ukraine's national symbols has increased significantly in Ukraine:

- The flag of Ukraine (from 26% in 2011 to 75% in 2023);

- Emblem of Ukraine (from 25% to 74%);

- Anthem of Ukraine (from 22.5% to 69%).

In addition, the share of those who are proud of the state language has increased from 32% to 74% and from 19% to 57% - of the national currency (hryvnia).

Razumkov Center experts also note that representatives of younger age groups are more likely than representatives of older age groups to be proud of Ukraine's state symbols and attributes of an independent state:

- 80% of respondents under the age of 30 are proud of the flag, and 69% of those aged 60 and older are proud of the national emblem;

- The coat of arms - 79% and 68% respectively;

- Anthem - 78% and 62%;

- Language - 81% and 67%;

- Hryvnia - 65% and 51.5%.

How do Ukrainians feel about Ukrainian culture and to which tradition do they belong?

Answering the question, to which cultural tradition do you belong, the vast majority of respondents (81%) said that they belong to the Ukrainian cultural tradition. Compared to 2006, the share of such people has increased significantly, as it was 56% then.

Also, the share of those who consider themselves to be part of the pan-European cultural tradition has increased from 7% to 10%. At the same time, there are almost no Ukrainians who identify themselves with russian or Soviet cultural traditions - from 11% to 0.5% and from 16% to 4%, respectively.

Experts note that the increase in the share of those who identify themselves as belonging to the Ukrainian cultural tradition occurred in all regions, but to the greatest extent - in the South (from 50% to 80%) and East (from 46% to 76%). In addition, the growth of this share was due to the russian-speaking population (those who speak mostly russian at home) - among them, the share more than doubled, from 29% to 64%. At the same time, among the Ukrainian-speaking population, the growth is much less pronounced, from 80% to 85.5%.

Among ethnic Ukrainians, the share of those who identify themselves as belonging to the Ukrainian cultural tradition has increased from 66% to 83%, to the pan-European tradition - from 6% to 10.5%, to the Soviet tradition - from 14% to 3%, to the russian tradition - from 6% to 0.2%.

Among ethnic russians, the number of people who identify themselves as belonging to the Ukrainian cultural tradition increased from 21% to 52%, while the number of people who identify themselves as belonging to the russian tradition decreased from 35% to 0.0%.

The respondents were also asked which cultural tradition, in their opinion, will prevail in Ukraine in the future (in 20-25 years).

Comparing the answers with 2006, the statistics are as follows:

- the share of those who believe that the Ukrainian cultural tradition will prevail has increased from 35% to 55%;

- a slight increase was recorded among those who believe that the pan-European cultural tradition will prevail - from 16% to 24%;

- the share of those who believe that different cultural traditions will prevail in different regions of Ukraine has decreased from 22% to 11%.

The number of those who believe that the russian or Soviet tradition will prevail is extremely low: in 2023, only 0.4% and 0.5% of respondents have this opinion, respectively.

The results of the survey prove that despite the difficult times, Ukrainian citizens are proud of their country and of being Ukrainian.
