Refugees from Ukraine currently residing in the Czech Republic have begun to face more financial difficulties in supporting their stay in the country. According to a study conducted by PAQ Research together with the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, two-thirds of able-bodied Ukrainians were able to find work, but mostly receive low incomes. This was reported by novinky.cz.
How Ukrainian refugees live in the Czech Republic: Survey results
The study, conducted by the sociological organization PAQ Research together with the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in June 2023, includes a survey of Ukrainian refugees about their quality of life. Among the respondents are 1425 families with 3789 people, including 1203 children.
According to the results, 68% of refugees survive below the poverty line, and 45% of families can survive for less than a month using their own savings.
At the same time, 67% of economically active refugees were able to find a job, but more than 40% of them do work that is far below their qualifications. Also, one-third of respondents reported that they work without social and health insurance, as well as vacations.
"Two-thirds of refugees earn only up to 150 kroons per hour (6 euros). A quarter of people need to have more work to support themselves," the survey says.
According to the survey, the main obstacles to finding a job among refugees are:
- Insufficient knowledge of the Czech language - 71%;
- It is difficult to provide childcare - 29%;
- Problems with the recognition of Ukrainian education - 28%.

Where do Ukrainians live in the Czech Republic?
Slightly less than half of refugees (49%) live in rented housing.
As previously reported, since July 1, the state has been covering accommodation costs for more than 150 days only for vulnerable categories of refugees.
Experts believe that the change in the state support system may affect the way some Ukrainians declare their income. Currently, 60% of refugees have received assistance.
Sociologist Daniel Prokop, who is a member of the government's National Economic Council and works with PAQ Research, believes that the change in the approach to assistance may lead to some refugees hiding their income. Currently, 60% of refugees have received humanitarian aid.
Prokop suggests that only part of the income from work should be taken into account when determining assistance, which could be, for example, 70% of the total income from work, as is already practiced among Czech families applying for financial assistance.
We remind you! According to the Czech Ministry of the Interior, about 300 thousand Ukrainian citizens have received extensions of temporary temporary protection visas in the country. However, asylum can be extended for a maximum of three years. Find out more about what Ukrainians can expect after the end of their protection in the country here.
