On May 26-June 5, 2023, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted an all-Ukrainian public opinion poll on the attitude of Ukrainians toward the russian dictator Stalin. Thus, citizens of Ukraine had to answer the question "How do you personally feel about Stalin in general?" Respondents could choose one of the answers: "with admiration", "with respect", "with sympathy", "indifferent", "with dislike, irritation", "with fear", "with disgust, hatred". At the same time, the results made it possible to compare the attitudes of Ukrainians and russians toward the russian dictator. Thus, KIIS sociologists found that there is a gap between the citizens of Ukraine and russia in their attitudes toward Stalin.

How do Ukrainians feel about Stalin: survey results

As of 2023, the majority of Ukrainians (61%) have a negative attitude toward Stalin, 26% are indifferent, and only 4% of respondents have a positive attitude toward the dictator. Sociologists note that regardless of age, Ukrainians have a critical attitude toward Stalin, but most young people are indifferent or negative, while the elderly are more likely to have a better attitude toward the dictator.

It is also important to note that even before the invasion of russia in 2014, Ukrainians gave mostly negative assessments of their attitude towards Stalin. 

Thus, "Even before the Revolution of Dignity, a minority of the population (23%) had a positive attitude towards Stalin," the sociologists concluded.

What is known about the attitude of russians to Stalin?

According to the latest survey results, the vast majority of russians have a positive attitude toward Stalin - the figure reaches 60% of citizens. At the same time, even young russians (18-24 years old) perceive the dictator as a positive personality, and only 8% of respondents stated a negative attitude.

What are the dynamics of attitudes towards Stalin in Ukraine and russia?

The sociologists compared the available results of the survey of Ukrainians and russians from 2012 to 2023. According to KIIS Executive Director Anton Hrushevsky: "Attitudes toward Stalin are a vivid value marker that demonstrates the gap between Ukrainians and russians."

Thus, as of the beginning of 2012, the share of Ukrainian and russian citizens who had a positive attitude towards Stalin was approximately the same, but over the next 10 years, a bright dynamics is observed:

- In Ukraine, the number of those who perceive the dictator positively began to decline. Moreover, by 2023, the attitude turned from "neutral" to "sharply negative."

- In russia, on the contrary, the number of citizens who favor Stalin began to grow, and today the vast majority of russians have a positive attitude. Thus, from 2012 to 2023, the share of those who perceive the dictator with special favor increased from 28% to 63%.

Thus, the results of the research clearly indicate that Ukrainians have nothing in common in their worldview and mentality with russians. This means that the most popular myth about fraternal peoples is once again shattered.
