Over the past two years, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturers have made several significant innovation leaps in the global UAV market. And the most important of these is the development of new artificial intelligence-based software that allows drones to perform their combat missions in any circumstances, even if the operator loses contact with the aircraft. This is proven by the tests of Ukrainian drones reported in The Washington Post.

Why have Ukrainian drones become innovative in the international market?

Due to the fact that Ukrainian UAVs are created on the basis of artificial intelligence, they are able to effectively overcome obstacles such as electronic warfare. And even if the operator loses communication with the drone due to electronic interference, the AI drone still achieves its goal. In addition, artificial intelligence allows drones to hit not only static targets at certain coordinates, but also moving ones, which is a revolutionary upgrade to all existing drones.

Today, more than 200 Ukrainian companies are working on the production of drones, and their main success lies in the fact that they work closely with the military on the front line. This allows them to quickly test drones, and then adapt and improve them, depending on the needs dictated by the battlefield, in order to not only effectively spy on the occupiers but also destroy them with the help of drones.

In addition, Ukraine faces a difficult task of gaining an advantage in the sky, given that russia has significantly more capabilities, production capacity, and obviously outnumbered aircraft, artillery, ammunition, and manpower. That is why, as Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology, noted, - "This is a 24/7 technology race."

However, today, according to Dmytro Kovalchuk, co-founder of one of the drone manufacturing companies, the Ministry of Digital Transformation has managed to speed up the procurement of drones between companies and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine from 2 years to 2 months.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense is transferring russian electronic warfare technology to Ukrainian private companies, which allows them to effectively test drones against some of the world's most advanced electronic warfare equipment, a privilege that the vast majority of international drone companies do not have.

"In the West, you can't just run a jammer and interfere with large parts of the spectrum to test your product. You need a special license, and even if you have it, it only covers a narrow fenced-off area. That's why this is one of the areas where Ukraine has a very real opportunity to develop a world-class solution," - says Andrei Liskovich, a former Uber executive who left Silicon Valley to help Ukraine win the war.

Which famous businessmen have already invested in Ukrainian developments?

As noted in the Washington Post article, Ukraine has always been known as a leader in agriculture and other heavy industries, but no one expected the country to become a place where innovative solutions in the field of drones would be developed. However, the war has turned Ukraine into a superlab of inventions that attracts a large number of well-known Western entrepreneurs, including former Google CEO Eric Schmitt, who has already invested about $10 million in a Ukrainian defense technology startup accelerator.

According to Eric Schmitt, who was an advisor to the Pentagon on AI technologies, AI-based drones are the future, and therefore he is ready to invest millions in scaling up Ukrainian developments and has personally visited Ukraine several times during the war.

"Ukraine is consistently outperforming the enemy," Schmidt said in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal in early July, after returning from a recent trip to the country. And may it always be so! Glory to Ukraine!
