Ukraine needs to return home the female refugees who left because of the full-scale war in order to restore the economy. Visit Ukraine writes about this with reference to a Bloomberg article.

It is estimated that millions of citizens have left Ukraine since the beginning of the russian invasion, 68% of whom are women. Against the backdrop of this phenomenon, a large gender disparity has emerged in the country.

According to analysts, if 2.8 million women of working age cannot be persuaded to return, it will cost Ukraine 10% of its annual pre-war gross domestic product (a loss of $20 billion a year in the worst-case scenario).

Such losses would easily exceed the four-year aid package offered to Ukraine by the European Union, worth €12.5 billion annually.

How to influence the return of refugees to Ukraine?

The government of Ukraine emphasizes that the country faces a crucial task - to do everything possible to ensure that women and children return to their husbands and reunite in Ukraine.

To motivate people to return home, the government is planning a post-war recovery with ambitious goals that include doubling the size of the economy by 2032, said Deputy Economy Minister Tetiana Berezhna.

At the same time, the Ministry of Economy notes that Ukraine lacks 4.5 million workers and entrepreneurs for this purpose.

Returning refugees is not an easy task!

According to the American newspaper, Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons make up a third of the total population living in Ukraine before the outbreak of full-scale war.

Some of the citizens who went abroad begin to adapt to their new place of residence, work there and begin to contribute to the development of other countries.

Some citizens may return to their homeland, but over time, while the war is ongoing, this may become more difficult. For example, after the last war in Bosnia ended in the 1990s, it took ten years for half of the two million refugees and internally displaced persons to return home.

Economists estimate that the return of half of the refugees could cost Ukraine about $10 billion a year, which would be 5% of GDP.

It is worth noting that the war unleashed by russia has provoked the largest wave of refugees in Europe since World War II. According to sociologists, since February 24, 2022, 8.6 million Ukrainians have left and never returned. At the same time, according to UN estimates, this figure is 8.2 million people, of whom more than 5 million are officially registered under European protection programs.
