Every year, the world honors the outstanding humanitarian Nelson Mandela, who changed the world for the better. On his birthday, July 18, it is customary to do good deeds and help those in need.

In addition, we urge you to think about the importance of humanism and democracy, as well as to remember that the world is now fighting against Goliath, who today and decades ago destroyed the humanistic principles of society.

Nelson Mandela and humanism: contribution to world development

The South African politician has dedicated his life to protecting human rights. Thanks to his philosophy and intelligence, he became the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

Mandela lived 95 years but spent 27 of them in prison on charges of terrorism. However, the long imprisonment did not break him. On the contrary, it gave him the impetus for significant achievements. Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and earned the title of one of the greatest humanists of the 20th century.

Thanks to his belief in justice and extraordinary efforts, Nelson Mandera overcame apartheid. He believed in the equality of people despite the color of their skin.

As the politician said: “I  have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities." And to implement this idea he was ready to die. However, fate was kind, and years in prison did not break the outstanding personality. On the contrary, this experience influenced his worldview.

Nelson Mandela believed that no one could understand a country until visiting its prison. So the UN General Assembly, based on his reasoning, created the rules for the treatment of prisoners, named it the Nelson Mandela Rules. Their main idea states that convicts are part of society and deserve humane treatment.

These rules are especially relevant now, when russia violates all international conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war. As the world has seen, russia and its leaders do not know what humanism is. They spare neither prisoners nor civilians.

Talking about South Africa, many people think of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This sports event would not have been possible without Mandela, who helped the country gain the right to host the championship.

The day dedicated to the politician was established in 2009 by the UN General Assembly to pay tribute to his contribution to guaranteeing freedom and peace in the world. The world community recognizes Nelson Mandela's efforts to resolve racial conflicts, ensure gender equality, protect the rights of children and vulnerable populations, and guarantee social justice. He also formed a government of national unity and implemented many reforms that opened South Africa to the world.

At a respectable age, Nelson Mandela left public activities and spent time with his relatives until his death in 2013.

How a terrorist country disregards all principles of humanity: russia as a synonym for genocide

putin's tyranny can be viewed through the lens of Nelson Mandela's positive politics. The kremlin tyrant is the absolute opposite of the South African politician who made a mark on history thanks to his fight against negative social phenomena. Instead, putin continues the policy of stalin, who committed the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

The war that started in 2022 is a tragic example of genocide on European lands. Genocide is the destruction of a nation, and the ongoing war have these characteristics. Among them are massacres of civilians, deliberate shelling of cities, use of prohibited ammunition, sexual crimes, deportation of children, and destruction of the food security system.

Unfortunately, it is arduous to prove this crime. To qualify the war as genocide, it is necessary to prove that the crime was intentionally aimed at the destruction of a certain group. That is, not just the destruction of infrastructure or murders, but rather the intention to exterminate Ukrainians as a nation. However, Ukrainians believe that justice will come.

In the last century, the world saw the brutality of russia. The Holodomor of Ukrainians was recognized as genocide by many countries of the civilized world. In the 1930s, the Soviet government used hunger as a deadly weapon to destroy the nation.

russia sought to destroy not only Ukrainians. In 1944, the Stalinist regime deported more than 200,000 Crimean Tatars from Crimea. 30,000 people died because of disease, hunger, and exhaustion.

In the 21st century, russia once again deprived the Crimean Tatars of their homes, occupying the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. Since then, the persecution of the Tatars has continued. According to data as of March 2023, russia is illegally detaining about 180 people from Crimea, 116 of whom are Crimean Tatars.

russians have no respect for other nations. History and the present confirm this. In June 1944, the Soviet authorities evicted Greeks, Bulgarians, and Armenians from Crimea. Historians report extraordinary numbers confirming that approximately 16,000 Greeks, over 12,500 Bulgarians, and about 10,000 Armenians were deported.

The modern government of russia does not take politicians like Nelson Mandela as an example. He overcame racism in his country, created a culture of respect for everyone, and fought for equality. russian leaders, on the other hand, are spreading hatred towards other nations, justifying xenophobia, and fanning the flames of ethnic strife.

How Ukraine supports national minorities

In June 2022, Ukraine received several conditions for potential integration into the European Union. Among them were changes to legislation protecting national minorities. Therefore, in mid-December, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a new Law on National Minorities.

With this law, the country demonstrates its commitment to protecting every citizen and proves its support for equality of citizens regardless of their nationality and race. The law established the concept of a national minority and indicated that these social groups are an integrated part of Ukrainian society. Additionally, those belonging to social minorities have the right to self-identification, use of the minority language, freedom of public associations, preservation of cultural identity, education in their native language, etc.

Respect for the rights of national minorities and human rights is a considerable aspect of Ukraine's European course. The Ukrainian authorities understand that it is crucial to help ethnic groups preserve their identity, as each ethnic group makes a unique contribution to Ukrainian culture.

We remind you! Today, the international justice system is under the scrutiny of millions of people. Read whether all criminals will be prosecuted in The Hague, what the future holds for putin, and how criminal justice works today here.
