The russian-Ukrainian war is called the most technologically advanced war in human history. Thousands of drones are used every day to conduct reconnaissance, attack positions, and help commanders coordinate the movement of their troops during combat. Read more about innovations that increase the efficiency of the Ukrainian army in the article.

Kamikaze drones

Ukraine became the first country to create its own fleet of kamikaze drones. The Ukrainians first used naval drones in October 2022 when they attacked the russian Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol.

The drones are 5.5 meters long, weigh about 1 ton, have a maximum speed of 80 km/h, a range of 800 km, 60 hours of autonomous operation and a payload of 200 kg.

UNITS

Ukrainian IT company Logics7 has developed a training system called UNITS.  The system is a military simulator that saves the real cost of scarce weapons.

It includes 24 weapon modules, including NLAW and Javelin anti-tank systems, as well as Stinger and Igla hand-held anti-aircraft systems, which adjust to wind and temperature, and include calculations according to the ballistic characteristics defined by the manufacturer.

The dimensions of the simulator are identical to real weapons. Thus, soldiers can train their muscle memory and perform combat missions effectively.

Рundreds of thousands of military personnel use UNITS. The price of the simulator varies depending on the number of weapon modules it contains (from 10 thousand dollars to 50 thousand dollars).

Griselda

The Griselda system is controlled by artificial intelligence that analyzes, filters, and monitors incoming enemy information, and can automatically collect information about enemy positions and movements.

The system is used by various situation centers and intelligence units to search for intelligence and enemy reports, test military hypotheses, and counter improvised explosive devices.

Griselda processes more than 25 thousand targets per month, and the time between receiving intelligence and its appearance in the system is 28 seconds.

Shoolika MK-6

Kharkiv-based SkyLab was founded after the outbreak of the war. After the first model of the Dzhura MK-6 copter, the engineering team worked with the military for a long time and received proposals for modifying the helicopter. As a result, the Shoolika MK-6 was created.

Shoolika has three functions: communication security, cameras, and payload. The price of one Shoolika MK-6 aircraft is $25,000-30,000."

Robots from SkyLab

The company also develops ground robots: The 6-kilogram UGV JOHNY MK1 drone works like a kamikaze and can carry up to 4 kg of explosives; the rover is completely waterproof and can travel to distances of 1 to 5 km.

The SIRKO-S robot can perform a wide range of tasks from cargo transportation to reconnaissance and inter-unit communication. The platform also carries 150 kg of cargo and is adapted to evacuate the wounded.

SIRKO-M drone. The improved version of the Sirko has a payload capacity of 300 kg. The price of JOHNY MK1 is about $5,000, and SIRKO-S is $8,500.

Toloka TLK_150

Ukraine has also started production of guided torpedoes. The Toloka project involves the production of three versions of underwater drones.

TLK 150 is the smallest mode, with a warhead of 20-50 kg and a range of 100 km; it has an electric motor and a mast with a camera and antenna. The guided torpedo is capable of scanning space and searching for targets using a 3D sonar and microphone; it uses GPS signals for guidance and an inertial navigation system in the presence of jamming signals.

Other improvements to the TLK include an increased warhead and range: The TLK 400 has a range of 1,200 km and a 500 km warhead; the TLK 1000 has a range of 2,000 km and an explosive payload of 5 tons.

Punisher

The Punisher is a Ukrainian reusable strike drone with "the world's cheapest production cost". One "container" of ammunition costs only $100. The drone is designed as a high-precision alternative to long-range artillery and missile weapons, capable of hitting enemy targets at a distance of 25-45 km.

Punishers can destroy targets in a single strike, minimizing the risk of civilian casualties. Priority targets include command posts, air defense and electronic warfare (EW) units, ammunition and fuel depots, command and staff vehicles, and barracks with personnel inside.

"Mule"

The main purpose of this drone from the Keep robotics team is to perform logistics tasks. Since the Mule is an unmanned platform, it can transport cargo in extremely dangerous areas and also serve as a support for infantry units.

The system is powered by low-profile, silent electric motors. The drone weighs 250 kg, is 1.5 meters long and 1 meter wide. "The Mule can carry a payload of up to 400 kg and has a battery life of eight hours. The cost of one system is $9,000.

Currently, the developers are working with the Kharkiv team to create a drone-based mine clearance system designed for anti-personnel mines, where a drone pushes a trawler to detonate the mine.

People's Drone PD-1

The PD-1 drone, developed by a private Ukrainian company, was originally intended for reconnaissance. However, it has been modified to include vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, eliminate the need for a catapult for launch, and be equipped with AI.

The new version of the PD-1 is equipped with a more powerful engine and can be equipped with barrage shells. The aircraft has a payload of 8 kg and a maximum flight time of 5 hours.
