Uniting for Ukraine (U4U): what is changing for Ukrainians in the United States
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than 200,000 Americans have agreed to become sponsors for Ukrainian refugees.
"Migration law, especially asylum law, is extremely complex in the United States. And the introduction of special programs for Ukrainians, such as password access and U4U admission, was an unprecedented decision. This has never been done for other citizens, other countries, and it has never been done with such speed," said Iryna Mazur, a representative of the board of directors of the Ukraine Immigration Task Force.
However, it has become more difficult for Ukrainians to obtain a permit to enter the United States. While at first everyone was admitted almost without checking, recently the vetting procedures have become much more stringent.
"Like all other programs, there are always abuses, both by sponsors and recipients. That is why the Migration Service and the Border Guard Service are much more scrupulous in checking people who apply and enter. Particular attention is paid to those Ukrainians who have not physically been in the United States," the immigration lawyer said.

She also noted that special attention is paid to minors traveling unaccompanied by their parents.
"Now at the border, in particular at the American border crossing in Europe, some Ukrainians have to undergo very detailed interviews. They are asked about the purpose of their trip, the target sponsor and their location at the beginning of the conflict. The rules have been significantly tightened compared to last year," explained Mazur.
This means that access to the US for Ukrainians has become more restricted. Recently, the requirements and checks have become more stringent, which indicates an increase in the difficulty of the process of migration to the country.
Mazur also added that while the U4U program continues to provide an exceptional opportunity for Ukrainians seeking asylum in the United States, it is an example of the evolving nature of the U4U program. It serves as an example of the American community's determination and support for the Ukrainian people.
