On June 28, 2012, the United Nations introduced the International Day of Happiness. Traditionally, this holiday is celebrated on March 20, the day of the vernal equinox, which is considered the day of renewal.

Happiness is one of the main indicators of a nation's well-being, as economic indicators alone do not reflect the real situation. Therefore, drawing attention to this issue is extremely important for today's realities in Ukraine. After all, the pursuit of happiness is a defining and inalienable desire of every person on the planet, regardless of external circumstances.

So what helps Ukrainians feel happy and remain resilient during the war?

The formula of Ukrainian resilience: the main components of happiness

According to a survey conducted by the Rating sociological group in June 2023, the main elements of the internal balance of Ukrainians are faith in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, family, and friends.

The survey was conducted using the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews) method. The survey involved 1,200 respondents over the age of 18 from different regions of Ukraine, except for the temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas, as well as those territories where Ukrainian mobile communications were not available at the time of the survey.

Thus, the study showed that:

● 86% of Ukrainians surveyed maintain resilience, inner peace and happiness due to their faith in the Armed Forces;

● 61% of respondents say that warm family relationships, relatives and friends help them maintain their stability;

● 31% of respondents owe their internal resilience to their daily employment and work, which help to distract them and keep them going despite terrible and tragic events;

● 20% of respondents said that they are holding on because of their faith in the state;

● Another 20% of Ukrainians remain calm due to their religious beliefs, i.e., faith in God;

● 12% of respondents said that fundraising (donating to the cause), direct volunteering and participation in charity events, international support and assistance have a positive impact on their level of resilience and happiness.

Other answers included: faith in society, elimination of news and negative information from one's own information field, as well as music, literature and cinema.

Are Ukrainians ready to endure difficulties to win?

The survey showed that the vast majority of Ukrainians are ready to endure the difficulties they will face because of the war for the sake of Ukraine's victory, whether it takes several months or several years.

So, how long are Ukrainians willing to endure for the sake of victory:

● 58% of respondents said they are ready to hold on and fight against difficulties for several more years;

● 12% of respondents said they would be patient for a few more months;

● 11% of Ukrainians said that they would be able to endure another year of such a life;

● 11% of respondents said they were no longer ready to endure war-related hardships;

● 8% of respondents could not answer the question.

Thus, despite the difficult conditions and constant challenges, Ukrainians show a high level of resilience and endurance. Internal supports help them feel happy and calm even in the face of the terrible war unleashed by russia.
