Every year in June, pride month is held around the world for the rights of the LGBT community. During Pride Month, equality marches are held in different countries of the world in support of the LGBT community, which draw attention to the restriction of the rights and freedoms of representatives of different sexual orientations.

Due to the martial law this year, the Ukrainian LGBT community was unable to hold a traditional march through the streets of Kyiv, but the topic of equality is not ignored in Ukraine. Virtual pride is going on in social networks, caring Ukrainians, businesses, brands and mass media are showing their solidarity: changing logos to rainbow colors, creating posts and appeals in support of pride.

Who from the Ukrainian business supported the LGBT community?

Comfy was one of the first to join Pride month. On its official Twitter page, the company announced that everyone has the right to accept their own nature, and tolerance and inclusiveness are considered important values of today. In addition, a rainbow flag appeared on the business logo.

The largest mobile operators of Ukraine - Kyivstar, Vodafone and Lifecell - also joined the campaign. Companies respect the right of each subscriber to be himself.

The Ukrainian government did not remain aloof either. The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy emphasized that "equality is one of the key principles of freedom." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also published an article in support of LGBT.

Ukrainian media also supported the campaign, in particular, Kyiv 24 channel and Ukrinform agency joined the pride month.

The rainbow logo appeared on the official pages of Ukrposhta, Kyiv City Center, Citrus chain, "Apteki dobroho dnya", SKVOT online courses, "Eskulab" medical laboratory, "Techno Yizhak" store chain, Hotline online service and many other Ukrainian companies.

Why do Ukrainian companies support LGBTQ+ and how did clients react?

According to the Forbes Ukraine magazine, some businesses received negative feedback from customers, while others received an increase in audience reach.

For example, the number of new followers on Comfy's Facebook page tripled. Only 10-15% of users were negative about Comfy's LGBTQ+ support.

The legal company Axon Partners did not observe a serious outflow of clients either.

Business representatives say that participation in the action demonstrates their values to society. The protection of human rights and, in particular, the protection of the rights of the LGBT community are important, because in a happy and equal society everyone should be able to protect their rights. 

This topic became especially relevant after the beginning of the full-scale invasion, because many representatives of the LGBTQ+ community serve in the Armed Forces. At the same time, there is no institute of civil partnerships in Ukraine.

How do Ukrainians feel about the LGBT community? Survey data

In June 2023, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) published data from a new survey, according to which the share of those who have a negative attitude towards LGBTQ+ representatives has decreased by 4% over the past year and is 34%. The total number of those who have a positive or indifferent attitude is 61%. The number of respondents who believe that LGBTQ+ people should have the same rights as other citizens increased by 3%.

The history of Pride Month

In the late 1960s in the USA, any person could be arrested on suspicion of homosexuality. Another police raid took place in the New York gay bar "Stonewall Inn" on June 28, 1969. However, on this evening, the LGBT community decided to openly resist the police for the first time.

Since then, June has become the month of pride - a period when representatives of the community in different countries of the world take to the streets to declare their rights.

Large Ukrainian companies show support for every Ukrainian and remind that human rights are always timely.
