In the first days of April, Ukrainian refugees began to return home en masse. A record number of people entering the country since the beginning of the war have been recorded at the Ukrainian-Polish border.

It is noted that the flow of people at the Polish border has almost doubled. According to the Polish Border Guard Service, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, there has never been such numerous of people heading home.

Usually, about 22 thousand travelers enter Ukraine every day, but on Sunday, April 2, 45,300 Ukrainians crossed the border. 

Where are the Ukrainians coming from?

According to border guards, most Ukrainian citizens are returning home from Germany, not Poland. This is because the Easter holidays have already begun there, which last from April 1 to 23 in different states. School vacations during this period last at least a week.

As you know, more than 1 million refugees from Ukraine are currently living in Germany, and about 203,000 Ukrainian children are studying in German schools.

In total, more than 150 thousand people entered Ukraine from April 2 to April 4.

What do you need to know about the rules when returning to Ukraine?

Citizens of Ukraine can freely enter the territory of our country. To return to Ukraine, you will need a valid international passport or an identity card for returning to Ukraine.

If your entry into Ukraine is temporary and you plan to return abroad again, you need to follow certain rules.

For example, the visa-free regime between the EU and Ukraine stipulates that Ukrainians can stay in the Schengen area for no more than 90 days out of the last 180. Therefore, before returning, check whether your stay does not exceed the allowed number of days.

In addition, most Ukrainians have been granted temporary protection status in Poland. It does not prohibit Ukrainians from visiting their homeland, but their stay in Ukraine should not exceed 30 days.

If a person stays in Ukraine for more than 30 days, they lose their temporary protection status and have to enter Poland under the general rules of the visa-free regime.
