Starting from April 1, 2023, new rules on free accommodation and health insurance for Ukrainians will be in force in the Czech Republic. The updated rules are due to amendments to the law on refugees from Ukraine, "Lex Ukrajina V", signed by the Czech President. 

What will change for Ukrainian citizens in the Czech Republic from April 1?

In particular, on April 1, the following new rules for free accommodation will apply:

- the maximum period of free accommodation is 150 days, starting from the date of obtaining temporary protection. The periods of residence in certain places are summed up.

- the period of free accommodation before the entry into force of Lex Ukraine V is also taken into account.

- Ukrainians lose their right to free accommodation if they refuse to live in the accommodation or leave it without good reason. It is considered that the person has exhausted the maximum period.

- If the 150-day period has already been exhausted before the entry into force of Lex Ukrajina V or within 90 days thereafter, then a protective period of 90 days from the date of entry into force of Lex Ukrajina V remains. This means that even after 150 days, refugees can stay for another 90 days free of charge, which will give them some time to find new housing.

In addition, the Czech Republic has amended the rules for obtaining free health insurance

After 150 days of stay in the country, the state will no longer automatically pay for health insurance for people aged 18 to 64. The state will continue to pay for such insurance in cases where a person's serious health condition prevents them from working.

For example, these are:

- bedridden patients;

- women with risky pregnancies;

- people with terminal cancer in need of palliative care.
