Romania plans to revise the conditions of support for Ukrainian citizens. What will change for Ukrainians living in this country is described in the article below.

It is noted that the daily expenses of the Romanian government for refugees from Ukraine reach 350 thousand euros. By the end of February 2023, there were more than 109 thousand Ukrainians in Romania.

According to the 50/20 scheme (50 lei for accommodation and 20 lei for food), the state pays homeowners 14 euros per day for each Ukrainian refugee.

However, now the support scheme introduced in Romania will be changed to ensure the medium and long-term integration of refugees. This was reported by the humanitarian aid coordinator Madalina Turza, who also added: "We want Ukrainian refugees to be independent in our country, children to be able to go to school and return home with dignity when the time comes."

How will the support system be changed?

It is expected that Ukrainians who find jobs and enroll their children in Romanian schools will receive 2000 lei (400 euros) per family by the end of 2023.

The subsidies will now be paid directly to refugees, not to the landlords who have been housing them until now.

At the same time, the 50/20 assistance scheme will remain available for vulnerable refugee categories, including people over 65 and students studying at Romanian universities.

Refugees from Ukraine will continue to receive free medical, social and educational services in Romania.

It is worth noting that 5000 Ukrainian refugees are currently officially employed in the country.

50/20 program in Romania: what is it?

The essence of the program is that individuals who have hosted Ukrainians receive monthly compensation from the state:

• 50 lei per person per day for housing;

• for food - 20 lei per person per day.

Legal entities (e.g., hotels) will also receive compensation - 100 lei per person, but no more than 230 lei per room.

The program was introduced to encourage individuals and businesses to help refugees and eventually solve the problem of their resettlement. The 50/20 program is similar to the 40+ program that operated in Poland during the first months of the full-scale invasion.
