Since April, thousands of refugees in Ireland have been at risk of being evicted. On April 1, the government of Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar will lift the ban on evictions that had been in effect during the winter. This was reported by The Financial Times.

Why did refugees face the problem of eviction in Ireland?

According to the politician, the country currently lacks 250,000 places to stay. Ireland has faced an unprecedented housing problem along with the need to provide housing for Ukrainian immigrants and refugees from other countries.

"We have now accepted 58,000 Ukrainians, and another 20,000 have been granted international protection. There is a big problem with housing", - explained Immigration Minister Roderick O'Gorman.

Local right-wing radical groups are using the housing crisis as a pretext for protests, some of them with banners that read: "Ireland is overcrowded". 

It is expected that the housing crisis in the country will reach a particular scale in 2023. According to experts, mass evictions will become an additional burden for emergency services.

According to the latest government data, a record number of people - 11,754, a third of whom are children - needed to find housing urgently in January.

What are the Irish government's forecasts for accommodating Ukrainian refugees?

The country's most popular party and opposition group, Sinn Féin ("We the People"), says that 10,000 people may be forcibly evicted this year. Its representatives are calling on the government to "show some compassion" and extend the ban on evictions.

Officials admit that more than 2,000 people who received eviction notices last year may still ask to leave.

As you know, in October 2022, Ireland introduced a ban on evictions due to the rising cost of living. Officials considered this a temporary measure, but now claim that lifting the eviction ban will protect the rights of homeowners who, for example, are facing rent arrears or are planning to sell their property.

Some hotel owners want to freely dispose of the rooms that the government has contracted to provide to refugees from Ukraine.
