For the majority of Ukrainians, the war was the most difficult test in their lives, which changed everyone. The psycho-emotional state, economic well-being, political views, etc. have been transformed. Over the past year, shock and confusion have given way to confidence and faith. In such a difficult period in Ukraine's history, most citizens have rethought their views, assessments, and lives.
On the one-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion, we decided to analyze how Ukrainians have changed over the past year, what they believe in, and what they expect from 2023.
Self-identification and belief in victory
The most important thing is that at the beginning of 2023, 98% of Ukrainians believe in victory (1% of respondents said they did not believe, and another 1% were undecided). For comparison, in January 2022, this figure was 56%. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are trusted by 97% of citizens.
Quite noticeable changes have also occurred in national self-identification: 94% of citizens consider themselves Ukrainians, compared to 76% in 2021. Ukrainians have also begun to speak their native language more often at home, at work, at school, or when searching for information on the Internet. Overall, the use of the language in everyday life increased by 22%.
Political course and prospects for joining the EU and NATO
Ukrainians support Ukraine's political course at a record level - 70-80%. Citizens' trust in the government has increased dramatically. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is trusted by 90% of Ukrainians, while before the full-scale invasion, only 36% of citizens trusted the President. Also, 86% of respondents believe that Ukraine should be a member of NATO, while at the beginning of last year, about 50% of Ukrainians were in favor of joining the Alliance. Also, 87% of respondents support joining the EU.
The emotional state of Ukrainians
Undoubtedly, the war causes a lot of stress. Ukrainians are most nervous about the loss of loved ones (63%) and the loss of a source of income (42%), followed by the risk of losing property and the risk of dying during the fighting. Unfortunately, sadness and anger prevail over joy and inspiration.
More than half of Ukrainians limit themselves to entertainment and shopping.
Twenty-one percent of families live at a distance.
The majority of citizens have suffered direct or indirect consequences of the full-scale invasion, with only 14% of Ukrainians having no losses.
Attitudes towards russia
92% of Ukrainians have a poor attitude towards russia, while only 2% have a good attitude. According to the analysis of sociologists in 2022, the attitude has changed dramatically, as 80% of those who had a good attitude towards russia before the war now have a bad attitude towards it.
Only 10% of Ukrainians believe that it is necessary to start negotiations with russia to end the war as soon as possible. 86% of Ukrainians are convinced of the need to continue the armed struggle. For 82% of respondents, no territorial concessions are acceptable. Only 10% believe that it is possible to give up some territories to achieve peace and preserve independence.
Expectations for 2023
The mood for 2023 among the population of Ukraine is also record-breaking optimistic, with 65% of respondents believing that 2023 will be better than 2022. For comparison, only 31% of Ukrainians believed that 2022 would be better than 2021. After the war, 79.2% of refugees plan to return to Ukraine. 65% of Ukrainians believe that the future prospects of Ukraine are at the highest level.
Ukrainians consider the restoration of businesses and jobs, as well as the restoration of damaged property, to be priorities in rebuilding the country.
However, 45% of Ukrainians currently do not plan their lives at all. But without any doubt, each of us believes 1000% in the Victory that is already waiting for us.
Glory to Ukraine!
