Temporary protection for Ukrainians is one of the mechanisms used to grant asylum to persons fleeing Russian aggression in Ukraine. This status is usually granted for a certain period of time, but it can be extended in connection with the ongoing war on the territory of the Ukrainian state. We tell you which countries extend the status and for how much.

France

Ukrainians who come to France can stay in the country without a visa for up to 90 days. For longer residence and social support, as in other EU countries, in France it is necessary to obtain temporary protection status, which allows you to stay in this country for up to 6 months.

At the same time, persons who have been in France for more than six months must extend their right to temporary protection (for the same period).

Slovakia

The Slovak Republic has extended the term of temporary protection for Ukrainians who found refuge in the country as a result of the full-scale war. Now the "Temporary Shelter" Certificate (dočasne útočisko) valid until March 4, 2023 is automatically extended until March 4, 2024.

Also, Ukrainians (having this status) can update their identity card through the electronic service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Slovak Republic, using the link: portal.minv.sk.

Austria

The Austrian government also decided to extend the temporary protection for Ukrainians. Now citizens can legally stay in the country until March 2024. Identity cards based on which refugees live in Austria will be valid until the end of the specified period.

As you know, you can get an identity card for displaced persons in Austria at the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum.

Ireland

Following the EU, the Irish also extended the temporary residence permit until March 4, 2024.

There is no need to contact the institutions to renew the status - it will be updated automatically. If necessary, you can download an updated document from the Irish Migration Service website.

Cyprus

A similar decision was made in this country - temporary protection for Ukrainians who have already acquired such status was extended until March 4, 2024.

Thus, Ukrainians who already enjoy temporary protection do not need to submit a new application to the Asylum Service or request a new residence permit.

Netherlands

In this country, the temporary protection was also extended until March 4, 2024. However, to extend the status, Ukrainians need to confirm their place of residence. You don't need to do anything, because the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service) will automatically check the address.

All Ukrainians covered by the Temporary Protection Directive will receive a letter from the IND by February 25, 2023.

Czech Republic

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 480,000 Ukrainians have received temporary protection status in the Czech Republic. However, the permit that Ukrainians issued in 2022 is valid until March 31, 2023.

In December, the Czech Republic officially extended the term of legal stay for Ukrainians until 2024, but not automatically, but on the condition that documents are reissued.

Sweden

Citizens of Ukraine who have left for Sweden will soon have their residence permits expire. However, it is possible to extend the status in the country, but those who have not yet done so need to hurry, as the application process is only available until March 4.

Belgium

Ukrainians who arrived in Belgium after February 24, 2022, received an A card valid until March 4, 2023. However, the country's authorities have allowed to extend the validity of the A card (temporary protection) until March 4, 2024.

To renew your status, you need to provide your passport, an expiring A card you already have, and a photo with a white background.

Estonia

The temporary protection status for Ukrainians who have arrived in Estonia since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine is also coming to an end. It can be renewed, however, a request to extend the status can be submitted no more than 3 months before the expiration of the permit.

Lithuania

At the end of last year, Ukrainians in Lithuania began to receive automatic notifications that their temporary residence permit in the country will expire on March 4, 2023. You should not be upset, because the status can also be extended in this country.

However, Ukrainians can extend their residence permits in Lithuania on the basis of work or study, as well as refugee status.

Italy

Currently, according to the current resolution that regulated the reception of refugees from Ukraine in Italy, the residence permit must be extended for 6 months and then again for 6 months. That is, for a maximum of 1 more year, taking into account the situation in Ukraine.

Ireland 

The government of Ireland has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians for another 12 months - until March 2024. It is emphasized that all residence permits issued from March 9, 2022 will be automatically extended.

Montenegro

Within three weeks, from 21.02.2023 to 10.03.2023, all citizens of Ukraine and foreigners who have been granted temporary protection status in Montenegro must personally apply to the offices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro (MUP) at their current place of residence to obtain a new temporary protection document, which will be valid until 11.03.2024.
