In Britain, the Homes for Ukraine visa program is in effect for citizens of Ukraine who seek asylum in this country, but do not have family ties. We tell you what kind of program it is and answer the main questions.
What do you need to know about the Homes for Ukraine program?
In simple words, Ukrainians who are planning to leave for Britain but do not have relatives can use the Homes for Ukraine program to find a sponsor who is ready to provide them with housing, such as a room or an unoccupied apartment, for volunteer purposes.
The sponsor can provide housing free of charge for a period of 6 to 12 months. There are no restrictions on the number of Ukrainians arriving in Britain under this scheme.
People who come to Britain under this scheme can live and work there for up to three years and get free access to NHS services, social benefits, job guides, education and other support.
Note that the program is currently available only if you already have a sponsor, but Homes for Ukraine organizers are currently looking for new verified people who are ready to help Ukrainians.
How to find a sponsor within the Homes for Ukraine program?
The charitable organization USPUK is engaged in the search for such people. However, the form for new applicants is currently closed while the company continues to search for sponsors.
Who can apply for the program?
This scheme is open to all citizens of Ukraine and their immediate family members: spouses, civil partners, single partners (must have lived together in a relationship for two years), children under 18, parents if you are under 18, fiancé or fiancé , or the proposed civil partner. These persons may be of a different nationality.
If a family, including children, has decided to obtain a visa, each family member must submit an application.
There are also rules for children under the age of 18. Yes, they should:
- or apply together with any parent or legal guardian;
- or apply to join a parent or legal guardian if they are already in the UK.
If the child is applying with a parent or legal guardian, the child must travel with them and live together in the same sponsoring home.
In addition, children who are currently outside the UK can use the visa scheme to be reunited with their parent or legal guardian who is currently resident in the UK if they are sponsoring the child or traveling to the same sponsor as the parent.
Children can participate in the program unaccompanied by adults. This requires the notarized consent of parents or legal guardian. And the potential sponsor must pass a security check before the visa-eligible child can apply for a visa.
As for the reliability of the sponsor, the British government is personally responsible for vetting such people. Inspectors check the potential sponsor and his accommodation. However, if you would like to cancel your sponsor, change it or resolve another issue, please call +44 808 164 8810.
How long can you stay in Britain on a visa under the Homes for Ukraine program?
If you have submitted your biometric data through the ID Check program (allows you to verify your identity online), without visiting a visa center, you will receive a permit to stay in the UK for 3 years immediately in the mail. However, once you arrive in the country, you will need to collect your BRP (Residence Permit) from the post office you specified on your application.
What if you haven't provided your biometrics?
If you have not provided your biometrics to the UK government (for eхample, on a previous visit) you will be issued with a temporary 6-month visa to enter the UK.
You will then need to submit your biometrics at any time during your first 6 months in the UK and the visa will be extended up to 3 years in total, including the time you have already spent in the UK.
When and how can I collect or apply for BRP?
There are several ways to apply for a residence permit in the UK:
1. Online for the Homes for Ukraine program without visiting the visa center and without using the ID Check program. Then you will receive a visa permit by e-mail and upon your first entry to Great Britain you will be stamped in your passport. You must submit an application to extend your stay in this country within 6 months from the date of entry.
2. If you applied for the Homes for Ukraine scheme outside the UK and visited a visa centre. Then you should collect your biometric residence permit as soon as possible after your arrival in the country. Your BRP will be available at your chosen post office approximately 10 days after receiving a decision on your application. It will be stored at the post office for 60 days, after which it will be returned to the center. If you do not have time to pick it up by mail, then the next steps will be explained to you there.
3. If you have applied for the program and provided your biometric information through the ID Check program, your BRP will arrive at your chosen post office within a maximum of 28 days from the date you receive your visa letter. There, the storage period is also 60 days.
We will remind you! Refugees from Ukraine, who left for Britain since the beginning of the war, are increasingly interested in returning to their homeland. How to return home and close payments, read the link.
