Chernivtsi is a cultural and educational center, the architectural pearl of Bukovyna, the Ukrainian Paris. Many have already heard about this wonderful place, some have been here on a trip, some have studied. However, the war changed the life of every Ukrainian in every city. Chernivtsi, which became a reliable refuge for many refugees with the beginning of the full-scale invasion, did not escape the changes.

History of Chernivtsi. How does the city live during the war?

Chernivtsi is located in the south-west of Ukraine and occupies an area of 153 square kilometers. Today, it is considered one of the safest cities in Ukraine, as far as it is possible in the conditions of war.

Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the city was home to more than two hundred and sixty thousand people. Currently, this number may be higher. In the first week of the war, Chernivtsi became a refuge for many internally displaced persons from different cities. The local authorities announced a possible shelter for twenty thousand people, but, unfortunately, a much larger number of Ukrainians had to flee. Officially, 40,000 IDPs are registered in the city, but in reality they are much more.

The city is a cultural and scientific and educational center of Ukraine. In Chernivtsi, you can get a higher education in as many as seven universities. However, the main pearl of the region is the Chernivtsi National University named after Yuriy Fedkovich - one of the oldest classical universities in Ukraine. The architecture and interiors of the university are impressive, the university is often called the Ukrainian Hogwarts. The complex was built in the 19th century as the residence of the metropolitans of Bukovyna and Dalmatia, according to the project of the famous Austrian architect Josef Glavka. Since 2011, the university building has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The historic streets of Chernivtsi also deserve special attention: Turetska ploshcha - a small square with a deep well in the middle of the street, a botanical garden and a real find for connoisseurs of Ukrainian history - the Jewish cemetery. Fans of chamber music should visit the local organ hall.
